Challenge Cup Comes To St Albans

ST Albans Centurions make their first appearance of 2005 when they take on leading amateur side Thatto Heath in the Powergen Rugby League Challenge Cup first round on Saturday 5 February at Woollams. It will be the first time a match in the historic Challenge Cup will have ever been held in St Albans and a bumper crowd is expected to see the new-look Centurions under new coach Colin Baker taken on the National Conference Premier Division side from St Helens. The Centurions made their Challenge Cup bow back in November 2003, when the tie was in the middle of their off-season, as an understrength St Albans went down to a narrow defeat to Pennine League side Birkenshaw in West Yorkshire. Thatto will be a tougher opponent as they are into the second half of their season although they are fighting relegation from the top flight of the national winter competition. The Cents, who start their third season in National League Three in early April, also play pre-season home games against Oxford University on Friday 18 February and Cambridge University on Wednesday 23 February, both at Woollams at 7.30pm. Kick off is 2pm with admission ?3 adultsd and ?1 juniors and OAPs, to be confirmed.

TWO of Scotland?s most exciting prospects received their Player of the Year Awards at a presentation ceremony after the Scotland v Australia Student International at Raeburn Place in Edinburgh last Sunday night. Glasgow Bulls winger Andy McPhail ? who scored with his first touch as a full international against Wales in October ? picked up the inaugural Roy Kinnear Award for Scotland Students Player of the Year. McPhail was one of six Napier University undergraduates in the Scotland Students side that lost 26-6 to the Aussies, McPhail setting up the home side?s only try with a trademark breakaway. The Glaswegian started the season in the Scotland Students side and after a prolific summer was promoted to the A team and eventually two full caps in the European Nations Cup.

Therefore, Friday night is arguably the biggest game in Scotland Rugby League?s history.

NEW Scotland coach Steve McCormack has named ten uncapped players in his 20 man squad for the European Nations Cup games with Wales and Ireland next week. They include Wakefield Trinity forward Duncan MacGillivray, former South Africa captain Jamie Bloem, York star half-back Danny Brough, ex Glasgow rugby union player Chris Birchall of Halifax and Bradford Bulls youngster Alex Szostak, along with four players promoted from the Scotland A squad. One of those, Glasgow Bulls? Andy McPhail, broke the points-scoring record with 38 in the win over Serbia in July.

SCOTLAND Rugby League celebrated their tenth anniversary today by announcing the return of professional international rugby league to the country as Scotland take on Wales in the European Nations Cup at Glasgow Hawks' Anniesland ground on Sunday 24 October. Scotland will then face Ireland in Navan on Friday 29 October with the group winners facing the winners of the England, France and Russia group in the final at Warrington on Sunday 7 November.
