Storm win epic clash against Dragons

ROUND 21 St George Illawarra Dragons 24 v Melbourne Storm 34at Oki Jubilee Stadium KogarahReferee: Sean HampsteadMatch Summary:The Melbourne Storm have prevailed over the St George Illawarra Dragons 34-24 in an enthralling encounter at OKI Jubilee Stadium this afternoon. The Storm led 16-12 at half time. The Dragons opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a penalty goal to Matt Head after the Storm were penalised for a grapple tackle. The Storm responded almost instantly with a try to Matt King. Colin Best let a bomb bounce and the ball was recovered by Steve Turner who threw a pass behind his back as he was headed across the sideline, and King touched down out wide. The Storm increased their lead only three minutes later with a try to Ryan Hoffman after some very nice ball movement created the overlap on the left side. The score remained 12-2 until the half hour mark when some Matt Cooper magic got the Dragons back into the game. Head kicked ahead, Cooper picked the ball up and scored in the tackle of Billy Slater. Four minutes later the scores were level with Mark Gasnier taking a Head bomb and scoring out wide. Unfortunately for the Dragons, Ashton Sims knocked on from the set right after the try, and the Storm made the Dragons pay with Steve Turner scoring in the corner on what turned out to be the last play of the half. The early period of the second half was frenetic, with Greg Inglis showing his brilliance with a 60 metre try from dummy half. Five minutes later the Dragons responded with a Brett Morris try off another perfect Matt Head kick. The Storm scored a rather fortunate try only minutes later after a pass to Hoffman hit him in the chest. He kicked the ball ahead once, recovered it and two passes later Matt King was in for a 26-16 lead.Billy Slater was sin binned for a professional foul four minutes later, and the Dragons took advantage of it with Trent Barrett scoring out wide several minutes later. The Dragons went very close to scoring again, but on the next set the Storm went nearly 100 metres, and kicked a penalty goal for a 28-24 lead. The Storm then knocked on off the restart, and the Dragons had two consecutive sets camped right on the line, but Gasnier knocked on reaching out to score. Billy Slater then inspired the final try for the Storm, breaking out of his own end to put the Melbourne side hot on attack, and a few plays later Cooper Cronk scored in the corner to put the icing on the cake.An amazing game that should really buoy the hopes of the Storm, while the Dragons can feel unlucky, poor goal kicking had them trailing late in the game when they could in fact have been leading. Storm bury yet another victim

ROUND 20Melbourne Storm 28 vs Cronulla Sharks 12at Olympic Park, MelbourneReferee: Steve ClarkMatch summary:The Melbourne Storm have continued their relentless march towards the Minor Premiership win a 28-12 win over the Cronulla Sharks in front of 11,486 fans at the ?Graveyard? in Melbourne tonight. The Storm opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a try to Cooper Cronk following a Ryan Hoffman break ? Cronk putting Hoffman into the gap to start the scoring movement. A Hoffman try after 20 minutes that went unconverted put the Storm up 10-0. Five minutes after that Cronk was denied a second try when David Kidwell was penalised for an obstruction. The Sharks then spent a long period on attack but the Storm defence held them out, before Dallas Johnson delivered a crushing blow to the Sharks with a try right on halftime to give the Storm a 16-0 lead at the break. It only took the Storm eight minutes to increase their lead in the second half with a classic Storm try. Cameron Smith took a kick on the full and set off in the other direction. He had enough time to position Billy Slater on his left shoulder before passing to him and letting him race away to score. On the hour mark the Sharks scored a well deserved try through Richard Villasanti who barged over out wide to give the Sharks a sniff at 22-6. Slater picked up his second somewhat fortuitously when Jake Webster broke up the middle and his pass back inside was knocked down. Slater picked up the bouncing ball and raced away to score under the black dot, Matt Geyer added the conversion to celebrate his 200th Storm appearance.Darren Albert dotted down out wide in the final minutes to give the score some respectability at 28-12. In reality the Sharks did not deserve to lose quite so heavily, as they had long periods of the match on attack but were unable to crack the incredibly resolute Storm defence at the crucial times. The win allows the Storm to open up an eight point gap at the top of the table, pending the results this weekend. Next week the Storm travel to Oki Jubilee Stadium for a much anticipated clash with the Dragons, while the Sharks look to arrest their four game slide hosting the Knights at Toyota Park.ScorersMelbourne Storm: 28Tries: Cooper Cronk, Ryan Hoffman, Dallas Johnson, Billy Slater(2)Goals: Matt Geyer 1/1, Cameron Smith 3/4Cronulla Sutherland Sharks: 12Tries: Darren Albert, Richard VillasantiGoals: Luke Covell 2/2Halftime: 16-0 StormCrowd: 11,486By the clockGood evening from Olympic Park Stadium in Melbourne for tonights clash between the Storm and the Sharks.Tonight Toshio Laiseni is out for the Sharks. Bulldogs win extra time thriller over Warriors

ROUND 18 Canterbury Bulldogs 22 v New Zealand Warriors 18at Telstra StadiumReferees: Shayne HayneHalf time: Warriors 18-12Match Summary:An 83rd minute try to Mark O?Meley has given the Bulldogs a thrilling 22-18 extra time win over the Warriors. It was a win made all the more impressive given the Bulldogs trailed 16-0 after only 17 minutes. The Warriors started the match with the lions share of possession and territory, and opened the scoring with a try to centre Simon Mannering in the 9th minute after Manu Vatuvei flew above Hazem El Masri to knock a kick down for Mannering to dive on.The lead was extended three minutes later when Vatuvei again out-jumped El Masri and passed on the inside to Wairangi Koopu who scored near the posts and the Warriors were up 12-0.In the 17th minute the Warriors showed more urgency than the Bulldogs, getting to dummy half before Bulldogs defenders could, then rookie halfback Grant Rovelli made a break and passed to Vatuvei who scored out wide. The conversion from Tony Martin hit the posts, and it was 16-0.Willie Mason came on for the Bulldogs, and it all changed. Firstly Ben Roberts made a break, and on the next play the ball was spun to Cameron Phelps who scored in the corner and got the Bulldogs underway. In the 28th minute, eight minutes after the first Bulldogs try Willie Mason set up Andrew Ryan to score. Seven minutes before half time a penalty goal put the Warriors up 18-12, and that was how the score remained for half time. Both teams played to a standstill in the second half. Willie Tonga scored in the 45th minute and El Masri coolly slotted the conversion to leave the match tied up at 18-all. The Warriors then managed to save a try when they forced Cameron Phelps into touch only five metres out from the line. The Bulldogs spent a lot of the second half on defence, and at times held the Warriors out for several repeat sets. The Warriors really ran out of steam in the final ten minutes, and were unable to get into field goal range. Daniel Holdsworth had three field goal attempts ? the best of which was charged down by Steve Price. He also missed two wide right, including one right on the end of normal time. In extra time, the Warriors spread the ball wide to Mannering who was nearly forced into touch. The ball was batted by the Warriors back infield to El Masri who took off, putting the Bulldogs into good field position.Replays suggested that the ball was in touch however. On the last play of the set, Bulldogs halfback Ben Roberts was put under pressure by the Warriors defenders, he got away from them and threw a fantastic pass to O?Meley who scored under the posts for the win.It was a fantastic game, and it should rightfully be argued that a draw ought to have been a just result from the match. The result makes it just that little bit harder for the Warriors to qualify for a finals berth, although they will be encouraged by holding one of the form teams of the competition to an 80 minute draw. The Warriors host the resurgent Eels at Ericsson Stadium next week, while the Bulldogs travel to Kogarah to face the Dragons on Friday night.Scorers:Canterbury Bulldogs: 22Tries: Mark O'Meley, Cameron Phelps, Andrew Ryan, Willie TongaGoals: Hazem El Masri 3/3New Zealand Warriors: 18Tries: Wairangi Koopu, Simon Mannering, Manu VatuveiGoals: Tony Martin 3/4Crowd: 14,076Halftime: Warriors 18-12By the Clock:Good afternoon from a sunny Telstra Stadium. ROUND 18 Melbourne Storm 10 v Brisbane Broncos 4at Olympic Park, MelbourneCrowd: 15,479Referees: Sean HampsteadMatch Summary:The Melbourne Storm have clung on to a six point lead to claim an enjoyable 10-4 win over the Brisbane Broncos in front of 15,479 fans at Olympic Park in Melbourne. The Storm led 6-0 at half time.Cameron Smith opened the scoring in the eighth minute with his only goal of the night following a penalty for a supposed high tackle. At this time the Storm had to make an early and unexpected change with Antonio Kaufusi having to leave the field with a leg injury. He would make a return shortly afterwards however. Only three minutes after Kaufusi was forced off the field the news got worse for the Storm when Scott Hill was forced to leave the field with a sternum injury. Hill was surprisingly pronounced able to return to the field after half time, but he wasn?t needed as the halves pairing of Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk were gelling particularly well. After 15 minutes Cameron Smith missed a tough penalty goal and the score remained 2-0. The game went from end to end with both teams having strong attacking opportunities, but it was a Broncos error that led to the first try after 28 minutes. Tonie Carroll knocked on and the ball ended up in Slaters hands. He set off and got around several defenders before the cover defence looked to have him wrapped up before he flicked a pass behind his back ? Benji Marshall style ? to a flying Steve Turner who raced away to score in the corner. The try was unconverted, and the Storm were up 6-0. Cooper Cronk almost made the Storm lead seven points, but he hit the crossbar with his field goal attempt on halftime. The second half was far sloppier than the first half. The Storm scored a decisive try 17 minutes into the half when Ryan Hoffman got the ball down out wide for a 10-0 lead. After this the Storm were almost constantly under pressure as they dropped the ball coming out of their own end plenty of times, as well as having fullback Billy Slater put under pressure. Brisbane winger Brent Tate was denied a try by the video referee after an hour, when he was knocked into touch before getting to the try line. The Broncos did score with seven minutes to go when Greg Eastwood benefited from some rare enterprising offloads from the Broncos. However the Broncos attack was largely nullified by the impressive Storm defence and the Storm comfortably held out late, desperate attack from the Broncos. The Storm go six points clear at the top of the ladder, at least temporarily. Next week they travel to EnergyAustralia Stadium to face the Knights, while the Broncos are assured of two points from the bye.Scorers:Melbourne Storm: 10Tries: Ryan Hoffman, Steve TurnerGoals: Cameron Smith 1/4Brisbane Broncos: 4Tries: Greg EastwoodHalf time: 6-0 StormBy the Clock:Good evening from Olympic Park Stadium in Melbourne.
