Monday?s Expert League Wrap - Round 8, 2006

ANOTHER big weekend of football began on Friday night with the Cronulla Sharks surging back into contention following their 40-12 victory over the Panthers in Penrith. The Sharks join a number of teams, including the Panthers, in the middle of the competition ladder on eight points.Saturday footy saw the Sydney Roosters bounce back with a victory over competition front runners the North Queensland Cowboys. After leading 10-6 at half time, the Roosters held on to win by 22-18. The result sees the Roosters join the log jam on eight points while the Cowboys share a chunk of the top spot on 12 points.Meanwhile in Melbourne, the Storm played excellent wet weather football to outclass the St George IIlawarra Dragons by 24-12. Saints are battling for form on eight points while the win elevates the Storm into 12 points and equal with the competition leaders. The Brisbane Broncos are also on 12 points after they came from behind to defeat the Canberra Raiders at old Lang Park. Amazingly, the 12th-placed Raiders led 18-0 at half time, only to be chased down in the second half.Sunday Rugby League kicked off with the Canterbury Bulldogs proving too good for the New Zealand Warriors with a 30-16 victory in Auckland. The Bulldogs are now firming into the top eight on 10 points while the Warriors are still trying to kick clear of the last-placed Souths.Talking of which, the South Sydney Rabbitohs continue their run of losses going down 24-18 to the fourth-placed Newcastle Knights at Telstra Stadium. The round wrapped up at the SCG with a thrilling 23-22 win to the Manly Sea Eagles over the Parramatta Eels. A field goal in 78th minute snatched victory, elevating Manly to 10 points and into fifth spot on the ladder. The luckless Eels continue to stumble in 2006 and remain in 13th position. All match results and details are listed below.LeagueUnlimited.com Player AwardsThe LeagueUnlimited.com Player Awards still has Cowboys five-eighth Johnathan Thurston leading on 16 points and Knights half back Andrew Johns is still in second place on 12 points. Monday?s Expert League Wrap - Round 7, 2006

WHILE most of us were tossing up whether or not to make an extra long weekend of it, the National Rugby League got underway with a number of score blow outs and over 50 tries for League fans to enjoy. The round kicked off with Friday Night Football at Parramatta Stadium. Leading 14-6 at half time, the Eels withstood a second half revival from Wests Tigers to run away with a 28-16 victory. It was a much needed win for the 2005 minor premiers and another clanger for the reigning premiers. Both sides are looking shaky in the wrong half of the NRL ladder. On Saturday, the Warriors made short work of the hapless Rabbitohs in Auckland. In what might well be the battle of the wooden spooners, the New Zealand side got some running practice to trounce Souths by 46-14. The win sees the Warriors get into the positives on the ladder. Meanwhile Souths have yet to post a win in 2006 and are now officially listed as the competition bottom feeders. On Saturday evening, the Melbourne Storm ripped into a Joey-less Knights, thrashing the fourth-placed Newcastle side by 52-6. It was a tremendous victory for the Storm who now sit in second position on the ladder. The Knights however, were a shadow of the side that clobbered Saints just two weeks earlier. It?s abundantly clear that this well-drilled Novocastrian outfit can quickly turn into rabble as soon there?s no Joey Johns at the helm.Meanwhile over at Shark Park, a boilover was happening with Cronulla Sharks pulling off a narrow 24-22 victory over competition favourites the Cowboys. After leading 22-10 at half time, the North Queenslanders were kept scoreless in the second half as Cronulla rallied home in front of woefully small crowd. Sitting in 11th position on the ladder, the victory comes after a tough week for the Sharks, and especially for coach Stuart Raper who was on the receiving end of an internet campaign to have him ousted. For the Cowboys, it was their first loss of the year but they?re looking quite solid at the top of the ladder.Sunday Football booted off with a victory to the Manly Sea Eagles as they thumped a disappointing Canterbury Bulldogs 40-14 at Telstra Stadium. Now in fifth position, Manly were impressive in posting their fourth win of the year and dominated their opposites from the outset. The Bulldogs lacked spark or imagination, especially in the halves. Now in sixth position, Canterbury have next week to bounce back and will need to lift or they?ll soon be heading south on the NRL ladder.Sunday afternoon saw a win to the Brisbane Broncos as they beat up a lacklustre Penrith Panthers by 30-6. Played in front 25,000 at old Lang Park, the Broncos took full advantage of an inept performance from Penrith. Described as a disorganised rabble, dropping balls, missing tackles and squandering possession throughout the contest, the Panthers obviously have some work to do. Like the Bulldogs, the Panthers have a number of teams breathing down their neck on the NRL ladder and will need to get a wriggle-on if they want to be serious contenders in 2006. The Broncos are sitting pretty in third spot and well placed as the representative season looms closer. Round Seven of Monday?s Expert League Wrap rounds up with Tuesday's Anzac day clash between the St George Illawarra Dragons and the Sydney Roosters. The Dragons led 14-12 at half time before a second half slog saw Saints get the points in downing the Roosters by 22-12. Heavy rain didn't dampen the spirits at Aussie Stadium with a crowd of over 31,000 on hand. All match results and details are listed below.LeagueUnlimited.com Player AwardsThe LeagueUnlimited.com Player Awards still has Johnathan Thurston at the head of the leader board. The Cowboys five-eighth didn?t score any points over the weekend but is looking good on 16 points and maintains a four-point buffer over his nearest rival. Knights half back Andrew Johns is in second position on 12 points and is expected back from injury in the next week or two.Melbourne hooker Cameron Smith is making his move after scoring two points last Saturday and he advances to outright third position on 10 points. Not far away are Adam Dykes (Sharks), Mark Gasnier (Dragons), Matt Orford (Sea Eagles), and Clinton Schifcofske (Raiders), all are well in contention on eight points. The full leader board is below. The Leagueunlimited.com players of the match are decided by our live score updaters and tallied here each week on Monday?s Expert League wrap.Want to be a live score updater? Monday?s Expert League Wrap - Round 6, 2006

FRIDAY night football saw the Brisbane Broncos travel to Sydney to overcome the Roosters by 24-6. Leading 8-6 at half time, the Broncos went on with it in the second half while the home side didn?t trouble the score board attendants for the rest of the day.Saturday afternoon took us to a close fought match in Brookvale with the St George Illawarra Dragons defeating the Manly Sea Eagles by 26-24. Saturday night saw the Melbourne Storm triumph over the Penrith Panthers by 40-18. The Adelaide crowd were treated to 11 tries with both Greg Inglis (Storm) and Lee Hookey (Panthers) posting hat tricks. Also on Saturday, the Canberra Raiders came from behind to defeat the New Zealand Warriors by 18-14, Alan Tongue scoring the match winner with just minutes remaining.Sunday kicked off in front of huge crowd in Townsville with the North Queensland Cowboys defeating a determined Newcastle Knights by 18-16. In doing so, the Cowboys have beaten off their main rival rivals for competition favouritism and continue their unbeaten run on top of the NRL ladder. Meanwhile, reigning premiers Wests Tigers thrashed the Cronulla by 42-16 in Campbelltown.Round six rounded up with the Bulldogs overcoming the South Sydney Rabbitohs by 26-18. The Rabbitohs led 18-8 at half time but were simply outclassed in the second half. All match results and details are listed below. After six rounds of football, Johnathan Thurston continues to lead the field in this year?s LeagueUnlimited.com Player Awards. The Cowboys five-eighth picked up one point on the Easter weekend to move up to 16 points and extend his lead by four. His nearest rival, Andrew Johns failed to score with the Live Updaters on the weekend and sits in second place on 12 points. News that Johns has suffered a torn ankle ligament couldn?t have come at a worst time for the Newcastle halfback. Last year?s LeagueUnlimited.com Player of the Year, Johns is expected to be sidelined for 1-2 weeks. In third place, Mark Gasnier (Dragons), Clinton Schifcofske (Raiders) and Cameron Smith (Storm) are all still well in contention on eight points. Monday?s Expert League Wrap - Round 5, 2006

COMPETITION favourites, the North Queensland Cowboys have continued their unbeaten run in defeating Wests Tigers 32-12 in Friday night?s ?grand final replay?. It was an emphatic victory over last year?s premiers as the Cowboys posted a club record five match winning streak to see them on top of the NRL ladder.

Monday?s Expert League Wrap - Round 4, 2006

LAST year?s grand finalists the Cowboys are outright competition leaders after coming back to defeat the Eels 26-18 at Parramatta Stadium on Friday night. Five-eighth Johnathan Thurston again led the way as the North Queenslanders remain undefeated in season 2006.In a round of close score lines, the Sharks got their first win of the year on Saturday when they downed the hapless Rabbitohs 24-22. Even closer were the Raiders who came back in extra time to pip the Panthers 21-20. Saturday night also saw Manly looking impressive when they overcame the Roosters 30-22 at Brookvale. On Sunday the reigning premiers Wests Tigers held out the Melbourne Storm to post a narrow 30-28 victory. Meanwhile a young St George Illawarra Dragons pack got the better of Brisbane to down the Broncos 26-12 in Wollongong. But the Monday?s Expert pick of the round goes to the New Zealand Warriors who travelled across the Tasman with the hope of stopping Newcastle?s winning run and advancing to zero points on the competition ladder. With no Andrew Johns to worry about, Warriors halfback Nathan Fien directed his troops across the park to defeat the second-placed Knights 26-22. Newcastle grabbed an early 10-0 lead but fell away to trail 14-10 at half time, the Warriors eventually coming out on top to win.The big news for the Warriors is they have now wiped the slate clean on the competition ladder. Monday?s Expert League Wrap - Round 3, 2006

THE Newcastle Knights kicked off the round by racking up a big score against the Bulldogs and moving to the top of the competition ladder. Fullback Milton Thaiday got himself a hat trick of tries while ?Joey? Johns was running rings around the flat-footed Bulldogs defence. Last year?s wooden spooners, the Knights have stunned opposition packs in recent weeks. The Warriors defeated last year?s premiers Wests Tigers to finally get their first win on the board for 2006 and their first win in New Zealand outside of Auckland. Now on minus two competition points, the result sees the Warriors move closer to zero, just one win away from wiping the slate clean and starting over.Meanwhile the Sea Eagles scored their first win of the season, defeating the Sharks in Brookvale. For the second week running, the Sharks have posted a handy first half lead only to be chased down by their opponents. In Townsville, the North Queensland Cowboys thrashed the Melbourne Storm. Five-eighth Jonhathan Thurston carved them up in a man-of-the-match performance. Last year?s grand-finalists, the Cowboys are looking to go one better in 2006.Sunday football saw the St George Illawarra Dragons score a big win over the South Sydney Rabbitohs, but not before Souths showed some ticker in the first half. In a sometimes scrappy game, Saints were just too good in the second half with Mark Gasnier racking up a hat trick of tries. In other matches, Darren Lockyer put in a sterling performance in Brisbane as the Broncos downed the Parramatta Eels and posted their second win on the trot. Meanwhile in Sydney, the Roosters hammered the Raiders 56-20 after the Raiders actually led 20-10 early in the second half. All match results and details are listed below. The LeagueUnlimited.com Player Awards sees two players breaking away from the pack. Newcastle halfback Andrew Johns and Cowboys five-eighth Johnathan Thurston have scored maximum points for three consecutive weeks to lead the awards on nine points.A log jam is developing on six points with Mark Gasnier (Dragons), Craig Gower (Panthers), Darren Lockyer (Broncos) and Cameron Smith (Storm) not far away from the front-runners.The full leader board is below. The Leagueunlimited.com players of the match are decided by our live score updaters and tallied here each week on Monday?s Expert League wrap.League Wrap: Round 3, 24-26 March 2006MATCH RESULTS:Newcastle Knights: 46Tries: Danny Buderus, Matthew Gidley, Todd Lowrie, Milton Thaiday (3), Brian CarneyGoals: Andrew Johns 9/10Canterbury Bulldogs: 22Tries: Hazem El Masri, Corey Hughes, Willie Mason, Andrew EmelioGoals: Hazem El Masri 3/4Half time: Knights 34-6Venue: EnergyAustralia Stadium Crowd: 25,504Referee: Steve ClarkLeagueunlimited.com players of the match:3 - Andrew Johns (Knights)2 - Josh Perry (Knights)1 - Milton Thaiday (Knights)Wests Tigers: 10Tries: Daniel Fitzhenry, Michael CrockettGoals: Brett Hodgson 1/2New Zealand Warriors: 26Tries: Awen Guttenbeil, Jerome Ropati, Clinton Toopi, Manu Vatuvei, Brent WebbGoals: Tony Martin 3/5Half time: Warriors 14-0Venue: Jade Stadium NZCrowd: 14,675Referee: Paul SimpkinsLeagueunlimited.com players of the match:3 - Ruben Wiki (Warriors)2 - Clinton Toopi (Warriors)1 - Steve Price (Warriors)Manly Sea Eagles: 20Tries: Travis Burns, Brett Stewart, Steve BellGoals: Matt Orford 4/4Cronulla Sutherland Sharks: 18Tries: Phil Bailey, Adam Dykes, Darren AlbertGoals: Luke Covell 3/4Half time: Sharks 10-6Venue: Brookvale OvalCrowd: 13,114 Referee: Sean HampsteadLeagueunlimited.com players of the match:3 - Ben Kennedy (Sea Eagles)2 - Steve Bell (Sea Eagles)1 - Adam Dykes (Sharks)North Queensland Cowboys: 40Tries: Paul Bowman, Luke O'Donnell, Johnathan Thurston (2), Ty Williams, Neil SweeneyGoals: Johnathan Thurston 8/8Melbourne Storm: 8Tries: Matt Geyer, Jake WebsterGoals: Cameron Smith 0/2Half time: Cowboys 22-4Venue: Dairy Farmers StadiumCrowd: 21,346Referee: Russell SmithLeagueunlimited.com players of the match:Leagueunlimited.com players of the match:3 - Johnathan Thurston (Cowboys)2 - Steven Southern (Cowboys)1 - Luke O?Donnell (Cowboys)South Sydney Rabbitohs: 14Tries: Yileen Gordon, Shane Rigon, Nathan MerrittGoals: Nathan Merritt 1/3St George Illawarra Dragons: 44Tries: Colin Best, Mark Gasnie r(3), Aaron Gorrell, Ben Hornby, Daryl MillardGoals: Aaron Gorrell 8/8Half time: Dragons 26-8Venue: Telstra StadiumCrowd: 16,049Referee: Jason RobinsonLeagueunlimited.com players of the match:3 - Mark Gasnier (Dragons)2 - Dean Young (Dragons)1 - Trent Barrett (Dragons)Brisbane Broncos: 30Tries: Justin Hodges, Karmichael Hunt, Darren Lockyer, David Stagg, Tame Tupou (2)Goals: Corey Parker 1/1, Michael Ennis 2/5Parramatta Eels: 10Tries: Ben Smith , Micheal VellaGoals: Luke Burt 1/2Half time: Broncos 8-6Venue: Suncorp StadiumCrowd: 25,525Referee: Tony ArcherLeagueunlimited.com players of the match:3 - Darren Lockyer (Broncos)2 - Karmichael Hunt (Broncos)1 - Justin Hodges (Broncos)Sydney Roosters: 56Tries: Ryan Cross, Brett Finch, Anthony Minichello(2), Amos Roberts(2), Iosia Soliola, Anthony Tupou(2), Ashley HarrisonGoals: Craig Fitzgibbon 6/8, Amos Roberts 2/2Canberra Raiders: 20Tries: David Howell, Alan Tongue(2), Lincoln WithersGoals: Clinton Shifcofske 2/4Half time: Raiders 14-10Venue: Aussie StadiumCrowd: 9,826Referee: Shayne HayneLeagueunlimited.com players of the match:3 - Amos Roberts (Roosters)2 - Anthony Minichiello (Roosters)1 - Anthony Tupou (Roosters)Penrith Panthers - ByeFULL DRAW, RESULTS & LINKS TO LIVE SCORES ?
