G?DAY everybody isn?t it good having the tri nations on TV it gives us footy tragics a bit shorter off season. And if you are like me you don?t mind a bit of biffo and a few big hits, you?d be really enjoying this season. And as we sit back and enjoy a few cold beers watching the footy and cricket after work, spare a thought for the players. It just seems like a few weeks ago the boys were playing in the grand final. You?d think they?d be having a well earned rest but no they are out slogging it out on the training paddock under the watchful eye of Sergeant Major Tony Guilfoyle.
During the season I was lucky enough to attend a luncheon at the club and the guest speaker was mountaineer Michael Groom, he is a truly inspirational speaker. Well some of that must have rubbed off onto Dolphins assistant coach Gary O?Brien. Gary a teacher took a group of kids climbing and of course he was there to look after them but led me to think, who was going to look after Gary. As it happened Sounda had a little accident on the way down the hill he describes as Everest like and injured his ankle leaving him laid up at home for a few weeks. I don?t know about his students but I used to dream of something like that happening to my teachers.
I know some people think front rowers are dumb and well some of them have given plenty of good reasons to think that over the years as well. Now you?d think after just playing a winning grand final side and retiring after 15 years of senior footy you would be kicking back and relaxing having a few beers with your mates telling lies about how good you were (That?s what I done anyway) but not Adam Starr, Starry has been seen in the gym at Dolphin Oval 3 days a week working harder than anyone. I have only one question why Starry. Or will this be the shortest retirement in history.
I remember as kid in Mackay watching the Sunday night BRL match of round on TV and whenever Norths played and Campbell Dews would get the ball you would the crowd chant Zuuuuuuuuluuuuuuuuu and since then the nearest cheer I?ve heard to that was the Toooooookey cheer everytime he carted the ball up. Hopefully I?ll be hearing a few of those cheers coming from the pig pen next when Mark Tookey is carting it up for the Dolphins.
One of Dolphin Ovals favourite sons made a comeback to sporting field a few weeks back. The girls from the retirement home were there lending support to our hero, the familiar cough was heard and the song Wild Thing blared out over the PA system the crowd erupted as Wayne Krusty Miller ran out in the local 35?s soccer comp the white boots were on, the bike shorts were on, he warmed up with a few sprints down the grand stand touchline in front of the laughing spectators. Then 30 seconds into the game Miller went looking for space and took off only to fall to the ground like he?d been shot but it was his hammy that shot.
HOWDY people well it?s the off season but we still have the tri nations to give us our footy fix. I made the trek down to Sydney to watch the NRL grand final with my good mates Iggy Graham and Scott Martin, congratulations to the Broncos on their win they should be very proud and Redcliffe should be proud to. If you look through the line ups and include the injured Michael Crocker there was Petero Civonceva, David Stagg, Dane Carlaw, Brent Tate and Shane Perry who have all worn the red and white of Redcliffe at sometime during their career that is an outstanding achievement for our Club and speaks highly of our development programs.
I understand the boys had a good time on their trip away to Cairns they done all the normal things checked out the local library, art gallery, photo gallery and other sights well that?s the story I am getting told anyway. If you believe that you?ll believe anything.
Well we?ve had the Peter Leis Medal, the Sunstate Player of the Year, the Courier Mail Player of the Year, The Dally M?s now for the most important and prestigious awards of the year The Robbo?s.
The Best Sledge:
A bloke in the crowd at the Queensland Residents game in Melbourne who yelled out to Adam Starr ?Hey number 16 take the pikelet off your head? referring to the follicle challenged front rower.
The Saturday Night Fever Award
Rory Bromley hands down he can cut a rug. I believe he had a whole night club in Cairns stop and watch him dance even the blokes.
The wish I didn?t do that award:
Assistant first grade coach Paul White who jumped and air punched when Rory Bromley scored his match winning try against the Young Guns at Dolphin Oval and tore his calf muscle.
BHP Award The Quiet Achiever:
Grant Flugge he doesn?t always get the raps of his higher profile team-mates but ask anyone of them who they want beside them going into battle and it?s him.
The Lowes Award:
Ryan Cullen I am sure his whole wardrobe comes from an OP shop.
The Jones Award
This award is dedicated to the Jones family Bob, Ben, Daniel and Terry and is given to the player seen the most times without a shirt on and the winner hands down is Nick Emmett.
The Cadbury?s Award
Strength and Conditioning Coach Tony Guilfoyle who lost his cookies after just one and a half cans of beer on a bus trip home from a game.
The Ironman Award
CEO James Hinchey who was in bed by 1.00 the first day of the trip away you may say 1.00am isn?t early but it was 1.00 in the afternoon on the Friday just 2 hours after the boys arrived.
The Happy Holiday Award.
It?s a triple dead heat between Steve Bleakley, Terry Webb and Wally Fullerton-Smith who despite not having played for the club in about 20 years still managed to find themselves on the trip away. I?m sure they were just there as Chaperones.
IT?S not often I am lost for words but how good was that win. Unfortunately I was in Mackay and missed possibly the greatest grand final win our club has ever seen although I am a tad biased towards 1997 myself. But I was yelling as loud as anyone down the TV, I can tell you those around me thought I was MAD ?.. And I know many people who would agree.I must congratulate Hook and all his staff, Gilly, Sounda, Whitey for a great job, as well as all the trainers Foo, Silent, Pecker, Jezza, Patrolman Pain all the boys who never get the wraps but work as hard behind the scenes as anyone in the Club and of course the man who bought it all together the boss Punchy. Since my last column the Colts got knocked out one game short, it just wasn?t your day against Wynnum also well done to everyone involved with that side during the year you can all hold your head high. I reckon a few of these guys can go a long way in the game David Hala is off to the Roosters, Tim Yee has already played Queensland Cup, Matt Gillett, Matt Handcock, Logan Sullivan, Tim Benson just to name a few will who will push onto bigger and better things. All the reports I got was that the boys are training well and will not lose. On the Wednesday night session the boys had some special guests drop into training Patron Dick ?Tosser? Turner addressed the troops, Tony Obst, Greg Conescu, Trevor Benson, Bob Jones, Dessy and Terry Webb were all there to lend their support and wish them the best. And game day there were a stack of ex players at Lang Park willing the boys onto victory in the crowd was Wally Fullerton-Smith, Bryan Niebling, Shawn Rubesaame, Festa Clanchy, Johnny Boxsell, Dennis Clarke, Jimmy Cowell, Greg Oliphant, Jason Campbell, Trent Leis just to name a few and the first player in the sheds after the game to say g?day and congratulate everyone was a bloke who had a bit of success at Lang Park earlier this year Adam Mogg. A phone call was placed to former captain Luke Scott from the sheds. They say being part of the Dolphins is very special and I?d say they are right. Now one more time for Starry everybody sing alongWho are, who are, who are weWe are, we are the RFCWhere do we come from rah, rah, rahRedcliffe, Redcliffe rah, rah, rahCheers boys here we are from RedcliffeEvery time we play, we play to win, play to winWe?ll show them one and allWith our backs against the wallYou cannot beat the good Reddy boysHip Rah, Hip Rah, Hip RahRedcliffe Dolphins 2006 Premiers sounds just rightUntil next month Cheers Robbo
HOWDY all I hope you all had a good month, can you smell it in air and I don?t mean the smell when the wind is blowing from the wrong direction I?m talking about semi final football. With the Colts and First grade flying the flag for the Dolphins I?m sure we?ll be right in the mix to win both those competitions. But in saying that the good teams go to another level at this time of the year and we have to go with them. My only advice is, boys rip in and do the hard work in the games and more importantly at training and the rewards will come. It may take you 80 minutes like it did us against Easts in the 97 Grand Final, just stick at it.
I must congratulate a few guys first of all Cowboy Troy Lindsay who is now on top of the tree as the player who has played the most first grade games for Redcliffe after passing Peter Leis in Townsville against the Young Guns. Against Tweed Heads Danny Burke notched up his 150th first grade game for the Club in just 7 seasons, which is about 22 games a year which is astonishing when you consider how he plays the game. Full on collisions nothing is half hearted with Burkey. I never got the chance to play alongside Danny but I would have loved to. And last but not least, to Pikelet Head Adam Starr well done mate. If the boys don?t get a home semi Starry has played his last game on Dolphin Oval. You won?t find a more passionate Dolphin than Starry and he?ll be a big loss for the Club when he retires at the end of the year. I am lucky enough to have seen Starry?s first and last first grade game at Dolphin Oval. I can remember in his first game people in the crowd comparing him to Ian Roberts for his footy skills not for other reasons.
ANOTHER month has come and gone, how quick is the year going only a few more weeks and its semi final time. The Dolphins are looking pretty good in all three grades and are a chance of regaining the Club Championship. Over the last month there have been plenty of good signs for the Dolphins despite being on the wrong end of some results. The emergence of Tim Yee as a first grader is one that immediately springs to mind and overall the group of talented young players we have in our club aged 16 to 19. Matt Gillett isn?t far away from Queensland Cup selection, Logan Sullivan, Foisa Peni, Michael Wilson, Tim Benson have all performed well in A Grade. With Colts stepping up it also gives opportunities to the guys in under 18?s and they too have grabbed them with both hands Liufau Hala, Takai Tikinau, Tommy Butterfield, Adam Marr, Jake Marketo, Jack Reed and Rhys Cooke have all done very well when called upon. I think everybody should get down to Dolphin Oval early and watch these young guys go around you won?t be disappointed.
It seems Shannon Fish is rubbing off on everybody at the Club whether this is a good thing or not I?m not sure yet.
City were playing Country in Cloncury Gary Belcher from the FOGS was the invited guest to do the ceremonial kick off and as you know on these occasions the players just stand there watch the kick off then the ball comes back and they do it for it real. But our brains at the back Ryan Cullen chased Badge?s kick off down field and attempted to make a tackle.
Prue Byrne the better half of Mick Roberts was in Melbourne to watch Mick play for the Queensland side. They were talking about Mick?s Maroons jersey when Prue asked what colour is the jersey.
While talking about the Melbourne game Adam Starr got a cork during the game and was on an exercise bike on the sideline to keep the leg going when one wag from the crowd yelled out to Starry ?Hey number 16 get the pikelet off your head. Obviously referring to Adams bald spot.
I am also trying to confirm if it was our very Troy Lindsay who was spotted in Molly Meldrum?s hot tub at an after Origin party.
Rumours flying around thick and fast that there are wedding bells in the air for a popular Dolphins back rower. I think I might walk to BURKE and back if it?s true.
The Dolphins had their annual ladies day against the Seagulls, The ladies enjoyed a few cold treats on the hill as they watched their partners run around, I?m not sure who was more vocal the pig pen or the ladies. The two lower grades done the job unfortunately the top grade didn?t aim up and got smashed. As a result I now owe Coach Wharton a carton of Crown Lager.
As I said with semi finals quickly approaching the boys all the support they can muster so grab a mate and head on down to Dolphin Oval for a great day?s entertainment. Pop over to the Old Boys Can Bar for a coldy and tell them Robbo sent you.
G?DAY everyone we are well and truly into the season now and we are sitting pretty well on the ladder. Despite a couple of ordinary performances in the last few games we have managed to get seven players into the City side to play Country. Unfortunately Nick Emmett had to withdraw from the side after being suspended but big prop Pat Gardner comes into the 17 in his spot. It is good to finally see Danny Burke get some recognition from the rep selectors. He has been one of our best for the last few years but when it came rep time his name was never one read out, well done Burkey. Also good to see Mario Guimelli gets a start for the Queensland Rangers side on their tour of New Zealand. While talking about rep footy how about former Dolphin Adam Mogg?s debut for Queensland in State of Origin two at Lang Park. He was sensational I know quite a few Reddy guys were at the game supporting him. I watched it at home with my boys, I was proud as punch to tell them I used to play with Moggy. They just looked at me and laughed and said yeah dad sure, that brought me down to earth real quick.I?ve been doing a bit more research to come up with some more nicknames of the boys to share with you I?ve heard Richie Russell is Cadbury?s, Sam Schull from the Colts is Herman. We have the Spaghetti Brothers in the backline in A Grade Chris Guimelli and Adam Luchetti, Tim Yee is Rowdy because he speaks so much. I know you have been waiting for the Shannon Fish update for this month and yes he does have one comment that sticks to my mind immediately. The boys were in the sheds one night when Fishy popped up and asked what month is Oktoberfest in. And it appears Ryan Cullen has been hanging out with Shannon too long. Ryan got called up to train with the Broncos and Coach Wayne Bennett asked him his what his Christian name was, Ryan just looked at Wayne with a funny look on his face and said what do you mean Wayne replied what?s your first name you goose.Reports are filtering back to me from all over the state from the millions and millions of readers from my column. When the City side came into Mt Isa they saw a big lake and one our boys in the side who plays prop and it wasn?t Starry or Cow said Gees the sea comes in a long way up here. It?s great to see young Timmy Yee getting a few games in the top grade, even he isn?t all that familiar with the position he is making a good fist of it. It?s good to see the senior players still try and test out the rookies, when the boys were at the airport to go to Rockhampton Danny Burke asked Timmy if he had his passport for the trip, I have it on good authority Burkey got caught with that same trick when he was a youngster. The Club is chasing any videos of games or highlights from the 1970?s or 1980?s apart from the grand finals if anybody out there can help can they get in contact with the club.Until Next Month Cheers RobboUp the Dolphins
ANOTHER month has flown by and the mighty Dolphins are still sitting top of the ladder as As I write this we are in the week of the top of the table clash with the Young Guns it should be a bottler, I hope a big crowd gets to Dolphin Oval and cheers the boys? home.
WE are back in the real stuff now playing for two points each week. After some patchy trial form the Dolphins have started with two solid wins.
WHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Gees it was finally good to see some footy action on the weekend even though it was a trial it was just good to see a live footy game.I am a fan of the new strip the boys are now wearing it is very much like the old Dolphins strips from the late 70?s and 80?s. It was a fair crowd for a trial, about 2000 I?d say and although it wasn?t the Broncos big names I think there will be a few future stars come out of that lot. It was a decent hit out for the boys although the end of the game got a bit scrappy. The combinations will come and in a few weeks that?ll just be a distant memory.Greg Bourke has bulked up a lot and not an ounce of fat (a lot like myself) I heard one guy quip he looks like he swallowed a body builder. It was good to see Mark Shipway back in Redcliffe colours after 10 years and didn?t he excite the pig pen with a few bone rattlers on the young Broncs.I think the guys were really happy to be on the field without trainer Tony Guilfoyle putting them through some cruel and unusual punishment. I was impressed with a few of the new players Pat Gardner now he likes a collision I think in his next life he will come back as a dodgem car or a wrecking ball, Kaine Manihera was good at times and I think our new half Marty Turner will get better and better each game for us. Alwyn Simpson in the reggies played well as did Phil Daisy, Michael Wilson and Tim Benson in the colts. Not that you could really class Tim as a new comer I remember when he was our mascot and led us out onto the field gees I am getting old.Well it had to happen sooner or later and most of us expected sooner Shannon Fish has come out with another clanger that he is famous for when he was talking to a few of the boys after the game he was telling them how happy he was with his new girlfriend and how he wouldn?t be going out with them on that night, he said ?I am a one man women? somehow I think he meant one woman man but keep it up Fishy you give me plenty of material. I attended the junior sign on day and once again I was blown away 200 new signings to the club the line up went for more than 50 metres and I think we signed up more than 700 kids on the day it was just amazing. Also how a bloke this guy I?m talking about Petero Civoniceva who gave up his own time to come along to the sign on and mix with both the kids and parents for over an hour. Petero of course is a local junior but these guys have so much dumped on them and don?t always get a lot of free time for him to do it I think was just great, and to see the smiles on the kids faces it was worth a million dollars. Now one last thing I won?t mention names for fear of my safety who are the two former Dolphins hardmen who never gave an inch when they played who have sons playing in the juniors who are dying their hair, like I said I won?t mention names I might get my ears BOXed in and I can?t fight like WBO lightweight champion Artur GrIGorian.Until next month Cheers Robbo
G?DAY everyone can you smell it in the air, before you say have you gone nuts Robbo what I am talking about is some footy action it seems like 12 months since there has been a game and I?m chomping at the bit to get down to the pig pen and see some action. I hear the boys will be sporting a new look and it?ll be great. Well when I played I was always up for a challenge and I had one thrown to me by big Rob from the spare parts section here at Keystar, he challenged me to come up with an A to Z of the Dolphins and more importantly we have a carton on the result and as I said I can?t knock back a challenge so here I go.A.
