Canberra steamroll struggling Knights

Four try assists by Canberra half back Sam Williams has laid the platform for the Raiders 44-22 win over Newcastle in front of 13,504 fans at Hunter Stadium. Williams and co had their way with the Knights for the majority of the 80 minutes.

It was the perfect start by the Green Machine who opened the scoring through Edrick Lee on 5 minutes after Blake Austin's hot form continued when he busted through the line and grubbered down the left hand side. Lee outpaced his opposite number Akulia Uate and planted the ball down, Croker's conversion made it 6-0. Minutes later the Raiders had opened up a 8-0 win after a play the ball infringement by Newcastle saw Croker extend their advantage.

Edrick Lee was again in the middle of the action when he leapt above two Knights defenders in an AFL style leap to score his 2nd try of the afternoon. Lee showed great poise and ball handling skills to control the ball and get it down over the try line, Croker missed the conversion and the score remained 12-0. Minutes later things went from bad to worse for the Knights when Jack Wighton sliced through some feeble Newcastle defence after a beautiful ball by Sam Williams. This came on the back of errors and missed tackles by the Knights who looked all at sea in the opening 20 minutes.

The Game went back and forth in the final 20 minutes as Newcastle scored two tries through both Uate and Leilua to reduce the margin to 8 points, before Josh Papalii crashed over right on half time to restore parity for the visitors, at half time the score read 24-10 to Canberra.

Newcastle had to be first to score in the second half to stay in the contest, and they did just that through Sione Mata'utai, who collected a nice bat back by Uate to score in the corner, Gidley sent the conversion over and again it was game on at 24-16.

However that would be the closest that the home side would get as the best attacking team in the competition began to flex their muscles ovr the next 30 minutes. Blake Austin scored two tries in the space of 4 minutes, both which included his famous left foot step, the tiring Knights couldn't match it with the Raiders star five eighth.

Gagai scored the Knights 4th try of the game on 64 minutes after a nice offload by Joseph Leilua, however it was all in vein. Jarrod Croker put the icing on the cake on 75 minutes after Sam Williams set up his 4th try of the day with a perfect hooked, chip kick. The following conversion saw the score finish 44-22 and Croker finished with a personal haul of 18 points.

The Knights have now lost 9 of their past 10 games are on struggle street. They will need a drastic change in coming weeks. Some soul searching will certainly be done over the next week as they have the bye, before returning to Hunter Stadium to host the Sharks in Round 15.

Meanwhile Canberra will be a very happy camp after bringing an end to a 3 match winless run. Ricky Stuart will be happy with his troops who played their hearts out away from home. The Raiders enjoy the week off as well, before they head home to Canberra to host the Cowboys in a fortnight's time.

In regards to both teams in this game, they are unchanged from Tuesday and line up 1-17, with both Dane Gagai and Kurt Gudley shrugging of their injury concerns for the Knights.

No changes for Canberra who are smarting after three straight defeats and Ricky Stuart coming off a 25,000 fine for his infamous pots match conference . They will want to put that behind them and get the win and keep in touch with the top 8. The form of Blake Austin and Jarrod Croker has been a bright spot in an other wise miserable last month for the green machine.
For Newcastle, after starting the season 4-0, they have only registered 1 win in 8 games in a torrid run for the Novacastrions. They need a change and need it quick as they have slipped all the way down to 13th. Their forward pack will need to muscle up against a Canberra pack that can dominate any team in the comp. Should be a massive battle up front!
