Storm surge towards a Top 4 finish

The Melbourne Storm have resuscitated their Top 4 hopes as they bounced back from their shock loss to Newcastle last Monday night, defeating the North Queensland Cowboys 14-6 in wet conditions at AAMI Park this evening.

The win sees the Storm now sit in 5th position heading into the final round of the season. They must now defeat a red hot Broncos side on Thursday night and rely on bitter rivals Manly defeating the Cronulla Sharks on Sunday afternoon to ensure they qualify in 4th position in 2015.

The Cowboys on the other hand will now finish in third place and certainly struggled in attack without five-eighth Michael Morgan, who won't likely return until the finals series. The Cowboys were held to nil until the dying stages when Jonathan Thurston found Kyle Feldt unmarked with a cross field kick to register their sole try for the night.

The Storm firmed in the betting once rain was forecast for tonight's clash and early on they were able to complete their sets and apply pressure to the Cowboys consistently in the opening exchanges. The Cowboys defence was solid however and it wasn't until a succession of penalties to Melbourne, saw skipper Cameron Smith elect to kick for goal in the 11th minute to register the first points of the night.

After the Cowboys repelled back to back sets, winger Kyle Feldt dropped the ball 20 metres out from his own line which proved costly. From the next set, Cameron Smith put Kenny Bromwich under the posts with a deft pass for the first try of the night. Smith converted to make it 8-0.

Two minutes before the break, Storm winger Matt Duffie looked all set to score the second four pointer of the night, only to be pulled back and flung into touch by Cowboys fullback Lachlan Coote. Coote's outstanding effort ensured that the Cowboys only trailed by 8 points heading into the break and considering Melbourne were camped on their line for long periods of the first half, they would have been feeling confident of getting back into the match at halftime.

Shortly after the break, Cowboys skipper Jonathan Thurston made a howling error when he spilt a Blake Green grubber, which was pounced upon by Will Chambers to extend the Storm's lead to 14 points.

A brilliant 40/20 kick from Blake Green in the 49th minute presented Melbourne the chance to to put the game away early but Tim Glasby knocked on the second tackle, with replays showing that Cowboys hooker Jake Granville may have played a hand in the error. Nonetheless the Cowboys were off the hook and showed tremendous character to hang in the match.

Back to back handling errors by the Cowboys really cost them any momentum on two ocassions in the backend of the match but their scrambling defence was certainly a positive that coach Paul Green will take out of the match.

Melbourne's defence was clinical and their fifth tackle options were more often than not the right one, as they managed to build pressure and force the Cowboys to try their hand in the wet conditions in order to get back into the match. Fullback Cameron Munster was outstanding for the home side, as his positional play at the back was always on point.

Melbourne now travel to Brisbane to face the second placed Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday night, while the Cowboys head back home to Townsville where they face cellar dwellers the Gold Coast Titans on Saturday night in their last match before the finals.
