A desperate, financially crippled Balmain Tigers club are just weeks away from handing over their part of the Wests Tigers NRL licence to Wests Ashfield.
The Balmain club, which owes some $5.4 million to the NRL, must pay the debt by the end of March or lose it's half share in the now-merged entity.
News Limited reports suggest Dawn Fraser, former olympian and a Tigers fan, has been asked to convince rich developer Harry Triguboff to save the Balmain entity by paying back the bail-out money, which was borrowed from the game's governing body back in 2014.
Wests Ashfield CEO Simon Cook has ruled out any changes to the NRL club's brand regardless of the outcome.
"Whatever happens, the Wests Tigers brand won't be changing. We're having constructive conversations with Balmain and the NRL now to find a solution."
