The Broncos have held off a wishful South Sydney outfit 30-8 on Friday night, in a match that saw two players placed on report, serious injuries on both sides and a 97-year-old record go by the wayside.
Ahead by only two points with 7 minutes remaining in the first half, tries to Kodi Nikorima and Ben Hunt had the margin pushed out to 14-0 at halftime.
After hammering away relentlessly at the Rabbitohs' right-edge defence for the first 33 minutes of the game the Broncos finally struck pay dirt not through an expansive backline play but a scoot from Kodi Nikorima from the back of the scrum 15 metres out from the try-line.
Forced to make 63 more tackles than the Broncos in the first half, the Rabbitohs were again under pressure from the opening set of the second half before the eldest Burgess brother began his mission to drag his team back into the contest.
A Greg Inglis try in the 51st minute gave the Rabbitohs some sweet relief, but Brisbane weren't giving up that game, despite the visitors coming within a converted try after a Bryson Goodwin penalty goal.
The hosts went on with the game after a spectacular try to Broncos' winger Corey Oates broke their spirits in the 64th minute, running in two more six-pointers before time expired through Corey Parker and Jordan Kahu - who converted each other's tries.
On the sidelines, Andrew McCullough sat out most of the game for Brisbane, as did Hymel Hunt (pectoral) for the Rabbitohs. Adam Reynolds and Paul Carter spent time off with various tests during the second half after copping heavy knocks.
Meanwhile, Sam Burgess was warned twice for "unnecessary contact" by referee Jared Maxwell, and Broncos pair Adam Blair and Joe Ofahengaue were both placed on report for high shots on Reynolds and Carter respectively.
Next week the Rabbitohs host Thursday night football against the Wests Tigers at ANZ, while Brisbane head on the road after three straight home games, visiting Southern Cross Group Stadium on Sunday afternoon for a clash with an in-form Cronulla side.
