The Canberra Raiders have scored a 30-22 victory in an entertaining and at times heated match against the Gold Coast Titans at Cbus Super Stadium.
A frantic first half saw almost total domination stats wise from the Canberra Raiders with almost 70% possession through the opening 40 as well a better field position and penalty rate than the homeside.
The Raiders took an early eight point lead with an early try to Paul Vaughan which was followed soon after by a Jarrod Croker penalty goal. The Titans then closed the gap soon after when Nene McDonald flew high over the Raiders defence to score.
Both sides then went try for try, with Jarrod Croker scoring then soon after Chris McQueen hit back after cleaning up a Jack Wighton spilt bomb before soon after than Jack Wighton set up his captain for a double just before half time.
It wasn't all smooth sailing during that first half with Titans rookie Nathan Davis suffering a serious ankle injury and was taken to hospital meanwhile for the Raiders Kurt Baptiste never returned after he failed his concussion test.
The Raiders then fired in the second half with two tries pushing the game out of reach for the Titans with both going to Brenko Lee who got the approval of the bunker despite video replays showing that his foot was a lot closer to the sideline than first thought. A piece of good fortune then gave Brenko his second when the Raiders wanted time stopped by Gerard Sutton whilst the Titans were attacking the Raiders line, it wasn't stopped and play went on and Brenko Lee took an intercept and scored.
Things then flared up and after a second incident referee Gerard Sutton put Greg Bird into the sin bin for attacking the head of a Raiders player, during the sin bin the Titans ironically had the running scoring a try through Ryan James raising hopes of a comeback but it wasn't going to happen with time running out.
Nene McDonald got the last try but it was all too late for the Titans and despite rapid play late they fell to the 30-22 loss.
Next week the Titans travel across the Tasman with the clash against the Warriors next Saturday whilst the Raiders will look to amend their early season draw when they host the Newcastle Knights at GIO Stadium.
