Canterbury did what they had to against Newcastle today, winning 28-14 up at Hunter Stadium in front of 13,318 fans.
It was a scrappy game in the wet up in the Hunter but the Bulldogs created enough opportunities to put away the Knights and soar into third position on the ladder.
Newcastle were the first on the board through a Hodkinson penalty goal but the Bulldogs looked the more likely to post the first try. It came through Moses Mbye, as he sliced through the line and sent Michael Lichaa over.
It didn't take long for them to add a second, the Morris twins combined to make it a ten point lead. Mbye had the tee once again five minutes before the break, as he slotted a penalty goal to stretch the lead to twelve.
Newcastle fought throughout the contest as they drew level within ten minutes of the restart. Both Knights halves were instrumental in the comeback, Jarrod Mullen threw a magical ball for Brendan Elliot's first before a wicked kick from Trent Hodkinson made it a brace for the young winger.
From there, the game descended into a grind before the Bulldogs got a stroke of fortune. Sam Kasiano charged down a Mullen kick and Mbye was on the spot to hand Bulldogs the lead back.
Another penalty goal and a late Sam Perrett score extinguished the hopes of the Knights and got the Bulldogs back into the promiseland of the top four with a month to go of the season.
Next week Newcastle host the second of four straight home games on Sunday afternoon against Penrith - while Canterbury are at home to Manly on Thursday night at ANZ Stadium.
