The Auckland Vulcans, featuring a number of Vodafone Warriors players, ensured a painful trip home for the Newtown Jets as they trounced the visitors 60-10 in Saturday's New South Wales Cup clash at Mount Smart Stadium.
The Vulcans ignited a triple header programme ahead of the Vodafone Junior Warriors and the Vodafone Warriors taking on the Sydney Roosters in NYC and NRL action.
Coached by former Kiwi Richie Blackmore, the Vulcans were on fire from the outset, racing to a commanding 28-0 halftime lead and going on with it in the second half. It was their fourth win in five starts this season and their first at home.
Included in the Vulcans' line-up were Vodafone Warriors NRL squad members Kevin Locke, Shaun Metcalf (who joined the club this week), Isaac John, Brett Seymour, Russell Packer, Upu Poching, Sione Lousi, Joel Moon, Alehana Mara and Saulala Houma.
Among those playing for the Jets - the Sydney Roosters' feeder club - were former Vodafone Junior Warrior Kurt Kara and centre Kane Linnett.
Packer, left out of the NRL side this week, scored two tries while Poching and Seymour scored one each and Seymour added eight conversions for a total of 20 points. Vulcans winger Johnny Aranga snared three tries and second rower Anthony Gelling two.
