The Newcastle Knights have played well enough to overcome a determined Northern Eagles outfit by 28-14 at Energy Australia Stadium tonight.
But the win may have been costly with star hooker, Danny Buderus being forced from the field in the first half with what looks like a broken wrist.
Andrew Johns kicked four goals and assisted in three tries to guide the home side to victory.
The Eagles opened the scoring when Nik Kosef fell on a loose ball in the sixth minute. But the Knights struck back with a leaping try to Timana Tahu (pictured) and at half time the Knights led by just 6-4. Newcastle came out in the second half with tries in the 43rd minute (Tahu) and in the 47th minute when John Morris pounced on a charging grubber kick from Johns.
The turning point came in the 61st minute when forward, Billy Peden got the perfect bounce from a Johns mid-field kick scoring next to posts to take the score to 22-4.
Kurt Gidley crossed in the 68th minute to put the match beyond question.
The Eagles scored two late consolation tries but it was all too little, too late.
