Bulldogs record win over the Rabbitohs

The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs have made NRL history at ANZ Stadium as they become the team to claim three successive victories by just a single point. They knocked off the South Sydney Rabbitohs, 15-14 as a Trent Hodkinson field goal in the final minutes secured the win in front of 43,255 in Sydney Olympic Park.

The Bulldogs looked to strike first points however the video referee overturned a try to Corey Thompson as an old fashion shepherd was caught as Josh Morris gained an advantage by running behind Greg Eastwood.

A scrappy first half saw the Rabbitohs struggle as their bench was left empty after 40 minutes as Kyle Turner (concussion), Api Koroisau (shoulder), Joe Picker and Dave Tyrrell were assisted off due to heavy contact.

The first points of the first half came through a penalty goal as Adam Reynolds placed the kick between the posts. South Sydney, 2-0 after 30 minutes.

The lifting and dangerous tackle has been the focus of the NRL community and rule makers since the Alex McKinnon incident back in Round 2. The test of the new approach to the lifting tackle will be put to the test at the Match Review Committee as Dale Finucane was placed on report for a lifting tackle on Ben Lowe (Rabbitohs).

Following the penalty the Rabbitohs charged towards the Bulldogs try line as Sam Burgess steamrolled Trent Hodkinson and Sam Perrett on the goal line to post the first four-pointer of the afternoon.

The Rabbitohs took an 8-0 lead into the sheds after a poor 40 minutes.

The second half saw an improved performance from both sides and the Bulldogs struck up first points in the second forty. Mitch Brown claimed his first try of the 2014 season as Sam Perrett provided a pin-point pass. The Bulldogs made it a 2 point game, Souths leaders 8-6.

The Rabbitohs through John Sutton extended their lead back to 8 points as Sutton charged through the Bulldogs goal line defence. South Sydney jumped back to 14-6 with 15 minutes left on the clock.

Corey Thompson was rewarded for his efforts in the blue and white outfit as dived over in the corner as the video referee cleared the lead up play of an obstruction. 10 minutes remained in Sydney Olympic Park, 2 points the difference again, Rabbitohs 14-12.

He is being touted as "El Hodkinson" as Trent Hodkinson's boot ended the difference with a penalty goal in the 72nd minute locking the game at 14-all.

Hodkinson's boot captured the lead for the Bulldogs, 15-14, as he snapped a field goal in the final two minutes.

The Rabbitohs unable to strike back despite several attempt at field goal, including a 52 metre attempt from Adam Reynolds.

Next week, South Sydney head north to Suncorp Stadium as he come up against the Brisbane Broncos. Meanwhile the Bulldogs host the Newcastle Knights in Saturday Night Football at ANZ Stadium.
