Burleigh Bears masters of power
play!

BURLEIGH BEARS 64 defeat SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES 4

A devastating tackle from the kick-off set the tone for the match as Burleigh thumped Souths Logan 64-4 at Pizzey Park.

Returning the ball for the first hit-up of the game, Magpies prop Andrew Anderson was picked up and driven back in to his in-goal by the swarming Burleigh defence, forcing a drop-out.

From the subsequent possession the Bears crossed via Trent Purdon, one of four tries in the first half as the home side moved to 24-0.

The second stanza was even more one-sided and, while nine different players ended up scoring for Burleigh, it was in defence that the reigning premier shone.

?The boys were right on the mark in that second half, just relentless,? said Bears coach Rick Stone.

?I actually thought impatience cost us a few more tries, but defensively they were very strong.

?You have to give credit for the boys being ?up? for such a long period of time.?

Indeed, Burleigh has been so on its game this season that it has only lost once in 11 appearances and is still undefeated at home.

Although the Bears were weakened by the late withdrawal of Aseri Laing (cork), they benefited by the return of captain Ali Brown, successful in shortening his suspension by a week.

Five-eighth Adam Hayden and backrower Adam Hutchinson were particularly dominant, with James Griffiths growing in stature week by week.

Reggie Cressbrook snared two tries and 10 goals to move even further ahead as the competition?s leading pointscorer, amassing 134 points to nearest trailer Greg Bourke on 96 points.

?We realise we will get beaten eventually but the main thing is I just don?t want it to be through poor attitude,? Stone said.

For Souths Logan, centre Bob Blair was again highly impressive, despite being on a well-beaten team.

Next Sunday Burleigh meets Redcliffe at Dolphin Oval, while Souths Logan takes on Wynnum the same day at Kougari Oval.
