BURLEIGH BEARS 32 defeat CENTRAL COMETS 22
A week ago he was the beneficiary. This time around David Hicks was the deliverer, setting up Burleigh?s game-sealing try in a tough 32-22 win over Central at Browne Park.
Essentially a battle between first and last on the ladder, the result was in the balance until the 77th minute when a Hicks break allowed fullback Phil Ramage to score and put the issue beyond doubt.
It was a somewhat similar script to Burleigh?s 22-16 win over Tweed Heads in Round 17, when Hicks gathered a neat Nick Shaw offload to score in the shades of fulltime.
The major difference however was that most had expected the Gold Coast derby to go down to the wire, but few predicted the same of the hit-out between the premiership and wooden spoon favourites.
?The Comets completed their footy well and were enthusiastic, while we probably struggled with the warm weather,? Burleigh coach Rick Stone said.
?I know Neale Crow (Central coach) thought it was one of their best games this year. Our team was looking a bit tired from rep games and the match against Tweed and Central put in a really good effort.
?There were things we could improve on, but at this stage of the season we?ll take the two points and the chance to freshen up.?
A bye this coming weekend for Burleigh means North Queensland could potentially grab first place and at least hold it until they encounter their own bye in Round 21.
Meanwhile Central will tackle Souths Logan at Blackwater on Saturday. The two clubs drew in Round Nine this season and it presents arguably the Comets? best odds of registering a win for season 2005.
Herewini Rangi was again among the best for Central against Burleigh, while hulking back-rower Andrew Dale had one of his more impressive games of the campaign. The Comets led 10-0 early, but were behind 14-0 at halstime.
Prop Shane O?Flanagan continued his knack of scoring tries when they are most needed for Burleigh, collecting a double, with James Griffiths and Mark Commens also handy.
BURLEIGH 32 (Shane O?Flanagan 2, Martin Griese, Adam Hutchison, Adrian Vowles, Phil Ramage; Phil Ramage 3, Trent Leis goals)
beat
CENTRAL 22 (Paul Albury 2, Matt Hill, Adam Geddes tries; Herewini Rangi 3 goals)
