Carnegie Challenge Cup Rd 4 Review

Co-operative Championship Barrow Raiders produced the shock result of the round as they dumped out Engage Super League's Castleford Tigers 34-28 at the Jungle. Ex Tigers Stand-Off Jamie Rooney led the way by scoring a brace and kicking 5 goals.

Jermaine McGilvary also scored twice for Barrow. Jordan Thompson, Mitchell Sargent, Kirk Dixon and Joe Westerman with two were the Tigers try scorers. However, former Castleford forward Ned Catic scored the winning try as last year's National League Championship winners booked a place in the fifth round.

In the tie of the round Super League Champions Leeds Rhinos looked back to their old selves and they easily overcame Hull FC at KC Stadium 48-24. The visitors ran in five first half tries as they led 30-10 at the break. England Winger Ryan Hall grabbed four tries as Leeds made it two wins in successive weeks over the Black and Whites.

Huddersfield Giants brushed past Hull KR 40-12 at Galpharm Stadium with Man of the Match David Fa'alogo scoring a brace in his debut game in the Challenge Cup. The hosts effectively had the game won at the interval as they opened up a 22-0 lead.

In another all Super League tie bottom of the table Harlequins RL knocked Wakefield Wildcats out 23-16 at the Stoop. Tony Clubb grabbed two tries as Quins led 22-10 at the break. Luke George got Wakefield to within a score, but a late one pointer from Luke Gale sealed victory for the Londoners.

Ctalans Dragons disposed of Salford City Reds 30-8 in Perpignan. Salford's arduous 24-hour overland trip to the south of France, due the Icelandic volcano ash was all in vain.  Jerome Guisset opened the scoring and Frederic Vaccari added a second to put the Dragons into a 10-0 lead. Salford's hopes were raised by two quick-fire tries from winger Jodie Broughton just before half-time. However the travelling took its toll and French-side dominated the second-half to run out comprehensive winners.

Holders Warrington Wolves had little trouble in defeating Featherstone Rovers 48-24. Fullback Richard Mathers helped himself to a hat-trick. Despite trailing 16-0 early on Featherstone clawed themselves back to 16-12 but the hosts were too strong as they marched on into Round 5.

Elsewhere in a repeat of 1998 Challenge Cup final in which Sheffield Eagles got past Wigan Warriors in the biggest shock of all time, the Super League leaders Wigan were given a tough game as they ran out 50-34 winners at Bramall Lane. The Eagles led 10-4 at one stage but a second half hat-trick from Sam Tomkins was enough to see the Warriors home.

St Helens overcame a spirited and enthusiastic Toulouse to post a 56-16 victory. The Icelandic volcanic cloud meant the French side had to endure a 24-hour coach and ferry journey to fulfil their Challenge Cup fourth-round tie.

The draw took place for the fifth round on Sunday Afternoon and the plum tie was a repeat of last year's Challenge Cup final with Huddersfield Giants entertaining Warrington Wolves. The other all-Super League ties see Harlequins host St Helens and Crusaders take on Catalans.

Barrow's reward for beating Castleford is a home tie against Hunslet, while Halifax host Batley.

Leeds was paired with Blackpool, Wigan face Widnes or Lezignan and Bradford play Leigh.
