Carnegie Challenge Cup Round 5 Review

The last sixteen got underway this weekend, as the road to Wembley got one step closer.

On Friday night in an all Super League clash Leeds Rhinos got the better of Harlequins RL 40-20 at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

Earlier in the season Quins produced a shock victory and this looked on track again as despite considering an early try to Zac Hardaker, they hit back with three scores of themselves in an eighteen minute spell from Luke Dorn, Chris Melling and Mark Calderwood to lead 14-6.

But Leeds stormed back and by the break they had opened up a 22-14 advantage. Jamie Jones Buchanan got things off with Brett Delaney and a storming effort from Ali Lauitiiti being the other try scorers.

Ryan Hall and Kyle Leuluai made sure of the Rhinos name going into the hat for the quarter final draw. Ben Bolger added a consolation for the Londoners before Chris Clarkson rounded things off for the hosts.

At the Willows Hull KR shut out Salford City Reds 25-0. The first half was a tight affair with the only scores coming from a Blake Green try three minutes from the break, converted by Mick Dobson.

Ben Cockayne added try number two three minutes after the restart before Kris Welham got his name on the scoresheet to make it 18-0.

Jake Webster scored the fourth, Michael Dobson making it four kicks out of four, to add to his late drop goal as Rovers looked forward to the Quarter final draw.

Warrington Wolves broke all records at the Halliwell Jones Stadium as they racked up 112 points to hammer a poor Swinton Lions.

The holders' resounding success was a club record victory, while Briers' tally was also a club individual best of 44 points.

Joel Monaghan ran in four tries on top of hat-tricks for Briers, Gareth Carvell and Chris Riley as the Wolves made it three games on the bounce without conceding a point.

On Saturday Castleford Tigers edged past great rivals Wakefield Wildcats 20-18 after golden point extra time.

The Tigers took the early lead on six minutes when Brett Ferres pounced to dive over from close range against his former club. But Wakefield were level within 10 minutes when skipper Glenn Morrison crossed, Josh Veivers converting. Veivers then kicked a penalty on 31 minutes for an 8-6 half-time lead before adding another four minutes after the break.

Tommy Lee made it 16-6 on 48 minutes. However, Castleford hit back and with tries from Rangi Chase and Danny Orr to level things up. Both teams exchanged penalty goals in the last ten minutes to take the game into golden point extra time.

As the players began to tire in extra time a succession of failed drop goals happened until on the ninetieth minute of the game Gareth Morton was penalised for ball stealing. Up stepped Kirk Dixon who cooley kicked the winning goal to send Cas through to the quarter Finals.

Hull FC ran out 50-26 winners at Widnes Vikings. The visitors led from the ninth minute to the final whistle at the Halton Stadium but were given a tougher contest than they might have expected by a side they will play in Super League next season.

Richard Horne and Tom Briscoe finished with two tries apiece while Richard Whiting, Will Sharp, Joe Westerman, Epalahame Lauaki and Cameron Phelps also touched down for the Black and Whites.

Widnes kept themselves in the contest early on with tries from MacGraff Leuluai - son of former Hull legend James - and Steve Tyrer as they never gave in.

At the Galpharm Stadium Huddersfield held off a determined Catalan Dragons 30-16.

Jermaine McGillvary gave the hosts the lead, the visitors hit back through Ian Henderson and Jean Philippe Baile to lead 10-4.

Leroy Cudjoe and David Hodgson scored just before the break to make it 12-10 to the Giants.

Kevin Brown added another just after the restart, but Jamal Fakir kept the Dragons in touch.

However, in the last ten minutes scores from Darrell Griffin and Brown killed off Catalan and put Huddersfield in the last eight.

Wigan were made to work for their 26-22 victory over 12-man Bradford Bulls at Odsal.

Played in blustery conditions, the Bulls made a good account of themselves and took the lead with try from young second row forward Elliot Whitehead.

Pat Richards responded for Wigan and the game turned when Gareth Raynor was given his marching orders for fouling Sam Tomkins in the act of scoring as the Warriors led 10-6 at the break.

The visitors increased their advantage through Brett Finch and Richards after the break, before Patrick Ah Van and Shad Royston gave Bradford hope.

Liam Farrell's try confirmed Wigan's progress into the final eight before Ah Van's scored a consolation on the full time hooter.

Elsewhere, St Helens cruised into the Quarter finals with a 70-0 destruction of Featherstone Rovers.

Saints led 18-0 at the break through tries from Francis Meli, Warren Thompson and Paul Wellens.

The second half was a procession as St Helens added eight more tries to run out convincing winners.
