Former Kiwis captain Nathan Cayless hopes to receive a medical clearance this week to enable him to rejoin his Parramatta team in the National Rugby League.
Cayless has been sidelined for four months with a broken arm but is close to a return and should know on Thursday if he is in contention for the Eels' round 23 clash at Melbourne on Sunday.
Coach Brian Smith might also decide to start test prop Cayless in Premier League providing he passes a medical.
"He's very close but no decision has been taken as yet," a spokesman for the Eels said today.
The 10th-placed Eels produced a belated spurt to put themselves in the playoffs frame, although they are four points outside the top eight on 22 points with four games remaining.
Cayless, 25, suffered the injury when he tackled Wests Tigers wing Robbie Beckett in late April. He was ruled out of last month's trans-Tasman test but was hopeful of being considered for the return match at Auckland in October.
