Cowboys corral bumbling Broncos

The North Queensland Cowboys have outlasted the Brisbane Broncos 16-14 in an exciting round one encounter in front of 45119 fans at Suncorp Stadium tonight.

The Broncos got the match off to the best possible start when young centre Jack Reed opened the scoring for the home side. Captain Darren Lockyer laid the try on a platter for the youngster with a perfectly timed pass. Unfortunately for the Broncos that was as good as it got in the first half as the Cowboys warmed to the task. After 12 minutes, Lockyer and lock Corey Parker had a head clash, leaving the skipper requiring stitches for a head gash. Cowboys front rower James Tamou got the Cowboys back on level terms when he charged onto a short pass from Thurston from 10 metres and carried several Broncos defenders over the line. Nine minutes later, the Cowboys extended their lead through winger Michael Bani who finished off a scintillating 60-metre movement. Working the ball out of their own end, Thurston's short-pass through the heart of the Broncos defence sent second rower Cooper into open space. Cooper drew Broncos fullback Josh Hoffman before sending Bani on an unimpeded 40-metre dash to the tryline. Cowboys centre Will Tupou rounded off the scoring in the first half, after Thurston was again inspirational. The classy halfback summed up the situation perfectly and saw the Broncos defence short out wide, delivering a perfect floating pass to Tupou who crashed over. The Cowboys went to the break holding a commanding 16-4 lead.

Jharal Yow Yeh closed the gap to just a converted try five minutes after the break, after Cowboys fullback Matt Bowen couldn't quite grasp Darren Lockyer's grubber kick into the in-goal. A controversial decision by video referee Tim Mander in the 69th minute did not go the Cowboys way after Thurston and Bowen combined brilliantly. Thurston found Bowen around the middle of the ruck, and with Broncos fullback Josh Hoffman baring down, Bowen chipped over the top and into the in-goal. Both fullbacks attempted to force the ball in the in-goal, but Bowen appeared to get there first. Mander ruled Bowen knocked the ball on in attempting to score the try. The scoreline of 16-10 would stay that way until the shadows of fulltime when another Broncos youngster, winger Dane Gagai crossed out wide with the clock showing six minutes left. Corey Parker's sideline conversion attempt waved away. The Broncos had one last chance to snatch victory in the final minute, but Sam Thaiday knocked the ball on while attempting to play the ball quickly, ensuring the Cowboys won their first Queensland Derby over the Broncos for the first time since 2007.

Next week, the Cowboys return to Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday night for their first home game of the season against the Knights, while the Broncos have a trip to Canberra Stadium next Friday night.
