Dairy Farmers to host Super 8's Final

THE under-11s from Centrals and Western Lions had their moments to remember at Dairy Farmers Stadium last month and it will be the same for the young footballers from Kirwan State High and St Brendans College this Saturday.

For the second time this season, the home game schedule at Dairy Farmers will feature a competition final involving our rugby league talent of the future.

This time, Kirwan High, from Townsville, will take on St Brendans, from Yeppoon, in the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys' Super 8s under-15s schoolboys competition grand final on Saturday's Cowboys v Wests Tigers program.

It was only four weeks ago that Centrals Gold defeated the Lions in the final of the Laurie Spina Shield as the curtain-raiser to the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys' match against the NZ Warriors in round 15.

The youngsters got to experience what it's like to play footy under lights in front of a big Townsville crowd as well as having their match covered in the Townsville Bulletin, Rugby League Week and on www.cowboys.com.au.

The 60-minute Super 8s final will kick off at 4pm and will be followed by a key NYC match between the second-placed Cowboys and sixth-placed Tigers at 5.15pm and the round 19 NRL clash at 7.30pm.

Both Kirwan and St Brendans have strong rugby league heritages which will they look to add to by winning the Super 8s title, contested by the top eight rugby league schools in Central and North Queensland, and both have their own rugby league excellence programs.

St Brendans' list of former students includes Cowboys life member and former games record holder Paul Bowman, as well as current co-captain Matthew Scott, current Origin player Dave Taylor and former Origin representatives Julian O'Neill and PJ Marsh.

Cowboys hooker Aaron Payne is a former Kirwan student as are current Origin forwards Sam Thaiday and Jacob Lillyman and NZ Warriors captain Michael Luck.

Cowboys development manager Dean Payne said the Super 8s had again provided a high level of competition in 2011.

St Brendans won the southern conference with three straight wins, while Kirwan matched them in the northern conference with three wins of their own.
