Dragons fire and leave Sharks black and blue

St George Illawarra have moved back into third position on the NRL ladder and waved goodbye to the Origin series in emphatic style, running out 38-8 victors over Cronulla in front of 16879 fans at WIN Jubilee Oval tonight.

One of the most eagerly anticipated matches of Rivalry Round 2011 took place with arch-rivals the Dragons and Sharks doing battle, but for the Sharks, they would be on the end of a red and white avalanche of possession and points in the opening 20 minutes.

It took only five minutes for the Dragons juggernaut to start firing. When the returning Matt Cooper sliced through some soft goal-line defence by the Sharks, the portents were ominous for the visitors of what was about to unfold. Several minutes later the Dragons kept in front of the clock through Brett Morris. The winger appeared to be held over the line as the home side ran the ball on the last tackle. But unfortunately for the Sharks, their defence would inexplicably switch off and Morris spun out of the tackle. Front rower Michael Weyman continued the procession in the 18th minute when he crashed over underneath the posts.

Halfback Nathan Fien picked up the ball from dummy half before passing a simple inside ball to the lumbering forward.

Matt Cooper appeared to extend the Dragons lead in the 23rd minute, but fortunately for the Sharks, winger Nathan Stapleton and Ben Pomeroy were successful in bundling him in touch in-goal. Jake Marketo completed the scoring in the shadows of halftime when he scored untouched, taking advantage of Nathan Fien's inside pass.

The Dragons went to the break with the benefit of 64% of possession and a comfortable 24-0 lead.

The Sharks suffered a blow early in the second half when winger Matt Wright was taken from the field on a stretcher after falling awkwardly in a tackle by Michael Weyman which saw the young winger's neck squashed under the weight of the Dragons forward.

The visitors had to be first to score in the second half to be a chance of an unlikely victory and they did just that through prop Josh Cordoba in the 47th minute. The front rower charged onto a short pass and surprisingly ran over the top of Dragons centre Matt Cooper. Colin Best trimmed the Dragons lead to 16 points when he took advantage of a perfect cut-out pass from five-eighth Wade Graham who hit Sam Tagataese on the chest. Filling in at centre, Tagataese drew the winger and sent Best on his way to the tryline.

That would be all the points the Sharks scored as the Dragons awoke from their halftime slumber to score the final 14 points of the match.

Jamie Soward scored the Dragons first try of the second half in the 70th minute when he fumbled the ball from the base of the scrum. The Sharks defence stopped, leaving Soward with a saloon passage to the tryline.

Interchange forward Jon Green put the icing on the cake minutes from fulltime.

Green charged onto Mitch Rein's short pass from dummy half, diving over alongside the posts. Soward wrapped up a perfect night with the boot, piloting the ball between the uprights for the seventh time in the night.

Next week, the Sharks host the Knights in a top-eight shootout at Toyota Stadium on Saturday night, while the Dragons travel down the Hume Highway for another Monday night encounter with the Raiders.
