EASTS 20 d WYNNUM MANLY 8
A JUSTIN McKay ankle tap proved crucial for Easts on Sunday as the Tigers overcame Wynnum Manly 20-8 before a bumper crowd at BMD Kougari Oval.
In one of the largest attendances for a Brisbane game this year, the Wynnum Leagues Club precinct was overtaken by cars, spreading all up Wondall Road and surrounding streets as fans flocked for the local derby.
It made for a fever-pitch atmosphere and the roar was deafening when Easts winger Steve Beattie spilled a ball into touch in just the second minute.
The Wynnum players fed off the hysteria and a further two minutes later Jimmy Ahmat found an overlap to his right, sending Chris Currie across in the corner for a 4-0 lead.
Both sides were at it hammer and tongs, with Tigers backrower Mark Cantoni meting out several punishing tackles in the opening exchanges. Before long the favour was returned and Cantoni was hit in a bell-ringer by Darren Bain.
