Giants sign academy international star

GIANTS SIGN ACADEMY INTERNATIONAL STAR

Huddersfield Giants have signed 18 year old England international back rower Matthew Sarsfield on a three year full time contract. The powerful young athlete was a standout performer for England in the recent series win over Australia and has impressed in a recent trial period at the club.

Giants Managing Director Richard Thewlis told www.giantsrl.com that Sarsfield was an investment for the future:

It's a super signing for us and one that shows how highly we are now regarded in the game by top line players. Young Matthew had a superb international series and has trained with the first grade here since then with a view to staying on when he had other offers on the table to start immediately. You could say he basically backed himself to get here (as we were his favoured option) when he had opportunities to secure his future elsewhere and all our coaches are impressed with him and he thoroughly deserves his deal here. He will debut at Batley alongside Jon Molloy and Jacob Fairbank in what I believe is a very exciting and promising back row for the long term future of the Huddersfield Giants.

Matthew Sarsfield commented:

I could have signed earlier at other clubs but the Giants are where I wanted to be and I am delighted to have got this deal. Jon Molloy told me lots about the club and how good the coaching and set up was and I am convinced that I can reach my potential here under Browny and his staff. The step up to full time will be hard but it's a challenge I am looking forward to and to my debut at Batley at the weekend. We have got a lot of younger players all pushing for first team places in these friendly games and all of them look to have the benefit of full time training which makes such a difference.

Other new Giants expected to start at Batley on Sunday 9th January are Joe Wardle, Matthew Dawson and Jon Molloy in a match that will kick off at 2pm.
