Gutsy Roosters outlast Sea Eagles

A CONTROVERSIAL 70th minute send-off of Jared Waerea-Hargreaves has overshadowed the Sydney Roosters gutsy 16-4 defeat of the Manly Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval in front of 12,950 fans.

The win further emphasised the Roosters premiership credentials and was their first win at Brookvale in nine years.

Waerea-Hargreaves was given his marching orders by referee Matt Cecchin following a high tackle on Manly forward George Rose.

With the scoreline reading 8-4 at the time, the Roosters defence refused to buckle despite the Manly attack asking plenty of questions.

An absorbing first half, played at break neck speed yielded just the one try with defence dominating proceedings. Manly appeared to miss the spark of Brett Stewart while the Roosters defence repelled everything thrown at them.

The only try of the first half came after 11 minutes when Manly were pressing the Roosters goal-line. Daly Cherry-Evans took the ball at second receiver before firing a pass intended for Jamie Lyon. Unfortunately it missed the mark and winger David Williams had to try to reel it in but couldn’t do so. Roosters centre Michael Jennings swooped on the loose ball and raced 90m to score untouched.

David Williams had an opportunity to score the Eagles first try after 28 minutes but Glenn Stewart’s perfectly weighted kick into the in-goal was batted over the deadball line by Roosters winger Daniel Tupou.

The 6-0 scoreline would remain that way until James Maloney piloted a 32nd minute penalty goal to extend the visitor’s lead out past a converted try.

Manly closed the gap to four points in the 46th minute when centre Steve Matai plucked a Daly Cherry-Evans cross-field kick out of the air to score 20m in from touch. It would prove to be the only points scored by the home side despite having most of the possession in the final 10 minutes after the Waerea-Hargreaves send-off.

Roosters hooker Jake Friend sealed the win on the stroke of fulltime by scoring a scrappy try after Shaun Kenny-Dowall’s kick ricocheted off the Manly defence as winger Jorge Taufua knocked on.

The win lifts the Roosters to second spot while Manly stay in fourth position.

The Bondi boys head to Townsville next Saturday night while Manly travel to Melbourne on Monday Night Football.
