The great Frank Hyde, one of the most popular and respected personalities in the history of Rugby League football in Australia, turns 89 on Monday, February 7th, 2005.
Frank joined the Newtown club in 1934, and played with the Bluebags for four seasons up to and including 1937. He was a first grader with Newtown when the club played its first season at the newly-opened Henson Park in 1936.
Frank later played with the Balmain, Waratah-Mayfield and North Sydney clubs, and represented Sydney, NSW Country and NSW on several occasions. The onset of the Second World War almost certainly denied Frank the opportunity of representing Australia.
He is fondly remembered by millions of people as the unchallenged doyen of Rugby League broadcasters. He had a long association with Radio 2SM and dominated the Rugby League broadcasting ratings for more than thirty years, and has also been the recipient of many civil honours.
The Newtown Rugby League Football Club and thirteen-a-side code supporters everywhere send birthday greetings to a really great Australian citizen ? Frank Hyde.
