The Brisbane Broncos have posted a comfortable 30-16 trial match win over the Canberra Raiders at Redcliffe's Dolphin Oval last night, but may have lost star full-back Karmichael Hunt who left the field with suspected torn stomach muscles.
New Broncos signing Israel Folau entertained the packed 10,000 strong crowd, carrying a pair of Raiders defenders on his way to scoring a try in his first match for the club.
But Folau's impressive Brisbane debut was soured when Hunt left the field. The 22-year-old departed inside six minutes and took no further part. He will await medical reports to determine whether he will start the NRL season in round one against the Cowboys on March 13.
The Broncos fought back from 12-0 deficit after having two tries disallowed in the opening stages.
The Raiders withstood an early onslaught to post back-to-back tries. Powerhouse Kiwi international Bronson Harrison made a break from inside his own half before offloading an inside ball to fullback David Milne to cross. The Raiders were in again six minutes later when prop David Tilse forced his way through a wall of would-be defenders. Five-eighth Terry Campese converted both tries.
But Brisbane hit back through Antonio Winterstein, the impressive young winger scoring in the left corner after a routine backline raid. Brisbane rookie Gerard Beale then out-raced a number of chasers to a perfectly-weighted grubber kick from halfback Peter Wallace in the 25th minute. Corey Parker converted both tries.
By half time, the Raiders lead was gone with the score locked at 12-all.
Wallace had an outstanding match, his kicking game coming to the fore again with tries to Taylor and Yow Yeh in the second half, the Broncos scoring four tries to one to run away with an easy victory.
