Hunt Ready for Origin - Tallis

Gorden Tallis has declared the Queensland State of Origin fullback spot the hottest contested position in rugby league in 2005, with Broncos young gun Karmichael Hunt likely to join the race.

Hunt, North Queensland's Matt Bowen, Canberra's Clinton Schifcofske, Melbourne's Billy Slater are all contenders for the custodian role held by Penrith's Rhys Wesser.

"Queensland has got a wonderful selection of fullbacks in Schifcofske, Slater, Bowen and Wesser," former Maroons captain Tallis said.

"I reckon that's the hottest contested position in rugby league, just look at everybody who could be there."

Tallis said he expected Hunt to make himself available for a baptism of fire during this year's Origin series after he was shielded in 2004 by Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett.

"Yeah I think he will make himself available for Origin selection," Tallis said.

"I think he's a wonderful player. He's like a Matty Bowen in that he can play a number of positions.

"He's got beautiful hands and we've all seen his great footwork."

Hunt will play a major part in a reshaped Broncos backline this season.

The Dally M Rookie of the Year will again line-up at fullback for Brisbane after inheriting the position following Darren Lockyer's shift to five-eighth.

He will be joined by Australian centres Brent Tate and Shaun Berrigan, off-season recruit Justin Hodges, halfback Brett Seymour and huge winger Tame Tupou.

Brisbane has been listed as $13 outsiders by Centrebet to win the premiership .
