Ipswich v Souths Logan Preview

THIS weekend's sole Wizard Cup fixture could produce any result, with exciting newcomers filling in for experienced campaigners and two teams hungry for victory on live TV.

IPSWICH v SOUTHS LOGAN QLD Group Stadium, Saturday June 24, 2.00pm *Live on ABC TV Referee: Gerard Sutton

THE STORY: The absence of central figures Danny Coburn and Brandon Costin gives this match an unpredictable edge. Both captains will be absent on City Country duties. Their places have been filled respectively by exciting youngsters Mananui Te Heu Heu and Chris Sandow. Souths Logan needs a win to keep it in touch with the top five, while Ipswich is still a mathematical chance of the finals, despite a 70-10 drubbing by Toowoomba last week.

THE STAT: Souths Logan has won the last two matches between these clubs, however both were played at Brandon Park. In April the Magpies prevailed 31-30 in a thriller, in which Brandon Costin kicked the winning field-goal. He also booted five goals and scored a try. The last match these two teams played in Ipswich resulted in a 30-26 win for the Jets.

THE STAR: Marsden State High student Chris Sandow is one of the most talked-about juniors in some time. A statewide audience will witness his debut for Souths Logan, a week after he scored two spectacular tries for the Queensland Under 17s against New South Wales at Suncorp Stadium. Already signed by the Gold Coast Titans and a true showman, he now has to prove himself in the senior arena.
