Flegg Shine Written by Wests Football Club Tuesday, 05 July 2005 Western Suburbs Jersey Flegg side put in their best performance of the season to down the 4th placed Sharks at Henson Park on Saturday. The Magpies, coming off two losses and the bye, put their season firmly back on track with a strong all round display that will have the leading teams looking over their shoulders. The Flegg team went into this game without their in form fullback, Shannon Gallant who had been called into the premier league team. He was replaced by Don Thompson who was returning from injury.

The game started at a furious pace and after only 8 minutes centre Warren Williams made a clean break which took the team within ten metres of the try line. In the following play half Brendan Waters cut though the defence to score alongside the posts. Williams added the extras taking the team to an early 6 ? 0 lead. The crowd, led by the Magpie diehards, urged the team on and in the 10th minute lock Brett Ryan ran at the defensive line, drawing several players before passing to second row forward Kerry Smith to score. Williams converted and the lead was extended to 12 ? 0.

From the side line you could hear the Magpies willing each other on and it did not take long before they were attacking the Sharks line again. Hooker and Captain Sam Hoare picked up the ball from dummy half and dived over under the posts. The try was converted by Williams and the Magpies lead was extended to 18 ? 0. The rest of the second half saw a rejuvenated Sharks team applying plenty of pressure and in the 19th minute they scored a good try and at the break the Magpies led 18 ? 6.

The second half saw the Sharks continue to improve and they scored a converted try, reducing the Magpies lead to just six. From the re start in play, the Magpies were caught on their own try line, however great vision from replacement Dean Rysko saw him run to the blind side, pass the ball to a flying Andrew Hill who advanced the ball to the Sharks 20 metre line. He off loaded the ball to Rysko who scored under the posts. Williams again added the extras and the lead was extended to 24 ? 12.

To their credit the Sharks pushed forward at every opportunity which saw them score their third try and with the conversion the Magpies lead was reduced to 24 ? 18.

The remainder of the half saw Kerry Smith score his second try after a fine run by fullback Don Thompson. The Sharks then hit back scoring their fourth converted try. Within a couple of minutes, Thompson was back on the attack and in the ensuing play, winger Andrew Hill scored. The Magpies were not done yet and their seventh and final try was scored by second row forward Rocky Trimarchi. Warren Williams converted each try and the final score saw the Magpies convincing winners, 42 ? 24.

Scorers for the Magpies ? Kerry Smith 2 tries, Brendan Waters 1 try, Sam Hoare 1 try, Dean Rysko 1 try, Andrew Hill 1 try and Rocky Trimarchi 1 try. Warren Williams kicked 7 goals from as many attempts.

Best for the Magpies ? Every player who took the field.
