Jets finally touch down for a win

IPSWICH JETS 22 defeat CENTRAL COMETS 20

After three successive losses by a converted try or less, Ipswich has finally emerged on the positive side of the ledger, beating Central 22-20 at QLD Group Stadium.

Sealed by a late try to hooker Adam Boettcher (pictured), the win was just the Jets? second of the year.

?To actually win one was good,? chief executive Brendan Hurst admitted.

?I think we could be forgiven for being nervous those last few minutes. Some people would have been expecting us to lose, given what?s happened lately.

?It was a very relieved shed, I can tell you that.?

Never a team to do things the easy way, Ipswich dragged coach Trevor Gillmeister through a tumultuous evening.

The Jets led early by 10 points, but by halftime submitted the lead. And once more the riversiders struggled with goal-kicking; Steve West converting just one of five tries.

However Boettcher and half Ricky Bird constantly asked questions of the Central defence and took good options at crucial times. Speed men Luke Walker and Andy Poynter also had strong games.

For Central, the narrow defeat continued a winless start to the season and consigned the Rockhampton team to last place, courtesy of Souths Logan?s upset against Norths.

It was unsurprising however to see Mark Henry?s name on the scoresheet again, scoring two tries to continue his potent form of late.

Next weekend Ipswich is away to Toowoomba at Clive Berghofer Stradium on Saturday, while Central hosts Wynnum at Browne Park the same evening.

IPSWICH 22 (Steve West, Johnathon Muir, Matt McPhee, Ricky Bird, Adam Boettcher tries; Steve West goal)
