Knights seal fifth with defeat of Panthers

Newcastle have jumped to fifth on the NRL ladder following a solid victory over Penrith at Centrebet Stadium this afternoon in front of 10,240 fans.

A relatively even first half saw Penrith strike first through a bizarrely awarded try - Dean Whare dotted down in the corner and while replays appeared to show the centre's other hand to have touched the sideline, the video referees ruled it wasn't enough to overturn the on-field referees' TRY call, and the home side drew first blood.

Both sides then continued with stuttering attacking chances, errors and discipline costing each team before Akuila Uate bustled through the Panthers defence to get the visitors on the board.

Penrith kicked a penalty goal ten minutes prior to halftime, which was then negated by a Newcastle try right on halftime, Darius Boyd marching his side up the field with a great break before backing up to burst through defenders himself. Newcastle then took a 10-8 lead to the break, and they were never headed after that.

The Knights started the second half with Craig Gower scoring in the 49th minute, backed up by Akuila Uate's second four-pointer in the 59th. From there Penrith's head seemed to drop, as did plenty of ball in their attempts to recapture their first half form.

Kade Snowden sealed the game for Newcastle with ten minutes remaining with a bustling try close to the line, with each side trading tries late in the game, including a bizarre try to Penrith forward Clint Newton.

Newton was the standout for Penrith, making plenty of positive runs, while Newcastle's standouts included Maroons rep Darius Boyd, Akuila Uate and centre Dane Gagai.

Newcastle head home to host the Sydney Roosters next Sunday, while Penrith have another Sunday 2pm clash lined up, this one at Remondis Stadium against fellow 1967 competition entrants Cronulla-Sutherland.
