Magpies wing it in massive upset!

SOUTHS LOGAN MAGPIES 22 defeat NORTHS DEVILS 20

An unthinkable upset by Souths Logan against Norths has been credited ironically by Magpies coach Phil Economidis on the failure of his players to heed instruction.

Celebrating the West End club?s first win of the season, Economidis said he had been working with game-breaker Grant Lewis for three months to curb his tendency for attempting intercepts.

On Sunday afternoon Lewis went against everything his mentor had been preaching and the net result was a last-gasp 22-20 win against one of the strongest clubs in the Queensland Wizard Cup.

It wasn?t quite in the same category as Matt Bowen?s heroic State of Origin deeds, but there was no doubting the joy delivered by the lucky plucker.

?I?m so relieved?so drained?and I haven?t even had a drink yet,? Economidis said after the match.

?That was a thriller. It?s been a long time coming after we?ve threatened a number of clubs, but haven?t done the job.

?For a young team where the oldest bloke is 23 to beat a bonafide NRL feeder team is going to bring a lot of confidence.?

Behind 20-12 at Davies Park just after halftime, Souths Logan never gave up hope, even when a stunning 90m movement ended with the ball fumbled across the tryline.

Darren Glase (pictured) was a standout as captain, while Bob Blair, Adrian Maloney and Nathaniel Bowman were all great contributors. Adding credence to the victory, cornerstone prop Stan Fau missed the game due to shoulder injury.

?I?ve always had this question about how do you measure success?? Economidis said.

?For a battling club I think we are doing okay. The boys keep working hard and if we can keep them together next season, the experience is going to be invaluable.

?I?m not going to win Coach of the Year if we finish last, but I know there?s been a lot more work put into improving this team than any other I?ve been with.?

While Souths Logan skips clear of last place, Norths has sunk to third after back-to-back losses.

Next round Souths Logan play Burleigh on Sunday at Pizzey Park, while on Saturday Norths squares up against North Queensland in the match of the round.

SOUTHS LOGAN 22 (Grant Lewis 2, Eddie Dodd, Nathaniel Bowman tries; Nathaniel Bowman 2, Craig Chapman goals)

beat

NORTHS 20 (Chad Leach 2, Quentin Laulu-Togagae, Josh Tatupu tries; Jeremiah Pai, Steve Irwin goals).
