Manly controversially overcome Cowboys

The Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles have beaten the North Queensland Cowboys in highly controversial circumstances at Allianz Stadium in front of 16,678. The Sea Eagles now advance to the first preliminary final at AAMI Park next Friday where they face the Melbourne Storm.

Things started quickly for the reigning premiers as they posted first points inside the first five minutes. Michael Oldfield went over off a short pass from Glenn Stewart. "Oldie" burst through the line to dive over in the corner, while Jamie Lyon pushed the conversion wide. As a result the score remained 4-nil to Manly.

A tactical play from co-captain Jamie Lyon saw the lead pushed to 6-0 after 18 minutes as he slotted the penalty goal.

Flying fullback Brett Stewart bolted onto a beautifully weighted pass from young winger Jorge Taufua. It was all Manly as they were running ragged over the travelling Cowboys. Lyon nailed the conversion to extend the lead to 12-0.

The Cowboys looked lost in attack for most of the first half, however they managed to get points on the board after 30 minutes through big running James Tamou. The prop-forward displayed his fancy footwork to dance over the whitewash, while Thurston swung the conversion between the posts to close the gap to six.

Manly had the final say of the first half with a penalty awarded on the half time siren, but Daly Cherry-Evans' field goal attemptfrom 30 metres out was unsuccessful. At the break Manly remained ahead 12 points to 6.

The Cowboys had to fire quickly in the second half if they were going to be any chance of stealing the match. They did exactly that with points posted after five minutes of the second half. Johnathan Thurston floated a beautiful pass to his winger in Antonio Winterstein, who broke the line and stepped down the touchline to score. Thurston rocketed the conversion attempt over the black dot to lock the game at 12-all.

The first of two controversial calls saw Jorge Taufua awarded a four-pointer after a question of double movement. He reached out for the line but had the ball helped over the line with a barging Ashley Graham. Manly kicked ahead, 16-12, with Lyon missing the conversion.

The second controversial moment of the match saw the Manly Sea Eagles cement their preliminary final position as Michael Oldfield claimed his second four-pointer of the evening. The fans blew up as the benefit of doubt was awarded to Manly, despite what appeared to be a knock on off the hand of Kieran Foran. However, the points were on the board as Manly held strong for the remaining 18 minutes to down the Cowboys 22-12.

While the Cowboys may have been "robbed" a victory in the eyes of many, they were out muscled across the park with handling errors and poor discipline costing them several opportunities. As a result of the victory Manly travel south to AAMI Park to face the Melbourne Storm next weekend for a spot in the 2012 Telstra Premiership Grand Final.
