NZ Bartercard Cup - Round 14
preview

Round 14 of the Bartercard Cup will be the make or break for four teams, as the pressure mounts with only three matchs left in the 2004 competition. The Tigers, Bulls, Tornadoes and Jetz are all fighting it out for the fourth and fifth position on the table, after all four teams were beaten last weekend.

The Bulls are barely hanging on to fifth placed after their third consecutive loss, after going down 28-22 to the inform Otahuhu Ellerslie last Saturday night. It was the Bulls first loss at home in two years, after having an impressive 17 match unbeaten home record at Rugby League Park. The match proves that Otahuhu are the team setting the standards after a poor start to the season. They have now won seven games in a row, and will be taking on Mt Albert Lions in the curtain raiser to the Warriors this Saturday night. The match shapes up to be the game of the season, as both teams sit second on the table with 20 competition points. The Bulls take on Wellington at Wise Park, and loser could kiss their top five aspirations good bye. Wellington will be without up to five players, who will be lining up in the Junior Kiwis to take on England U18 this Sunday at North Harbour Stadium.

The Tigers suffered their first home loss of the season last week, after going down 46-34 to Waicoa Bay Stallions last Sunday. The Stallions finaly broke their seven game losing streak, and now look to finish the season as they started, on a high. The once table topping Stallions, lost their way after losing halfback Hayden Karena to the North Queensland Cowboys mid season. This week they match up against the Glenora, and should dispose of them and collect another much needed victory. The Tigers will take on the top team in the competition, Marist Richmond Brothers. The Tigers are the only team this year to walk away from a match up against the Brothers, with two competition points. And a loss this weekend could see them slip from four position to sixth.

The Jetz will head to Stanmore Bay Reserve, to take on last place Hibiscus Coast Raiders. The match is another must win for the Jetz, who are performing well in their debut season in the Bartercard Cup. The Raiders scored their second victory of the year last weekend, after a thrilling 38-26 win over the Central Falcons at Stanmore Bay Reserve. On the back of former NRL player Odell Manuel, the Raiders loom to be a major danger to any team in play off contention.

The last match of the round sees the out of form Tornadoes travel to Palmerston North to take on the very unpredictable Central Falcons. The Tornadoes need a big victory to help their for and against, but The Falcons (who last beat Mt Albert 36-22 at home), are no easy beats on their home turf. A loss for the Tornadoes will spell the end of the season for them, after suffering a devastating 54-10 loss to Marist last weekend.
