NZ Warriors lose great clubman

The New Zealand Warriors have lost an outstanding member of their organisation with the passing yesterday of Tony Whitworth. Tony had been bravely fighting a lengthy battle against cancer but passed away peacefully in a hospice in Auckland with family by his side.

Tony joined the Warriors as a volunteer towards the end of 2000 and provided ongoing, invaluable service to the club via his role as video and statistical manager. He happily gave countless hours of his time to the club both at home and in the Warriors? football office, with no task ever proving too big.

Club General Manager Spiro Tsiros was extremely praiseworthy of Tony?s value to the club. ?Tony was voted clubman of the year in 2003 for the work that he always did for us over and above the call of duty. Tony?s behind the scenes contribution to the club?s on-field success was vital and he always performed his duties with a smile on his face and a kind word to everyone,? Tsiros said.

?In honour of his memory, the Warriors? perpetual award for the most valued club-person will in future be known as The Tony Whitworth Clubman of the Year Award. The club?s deepest condolences go to Tony?s family at this very difficult time and our thoughts are with them. Tony?s place in our club and our hearts will remain forever,? Tsiros added.

Tony is survived by his wife Berryl; children Gary & Susan, David & Annette, and Diane & David; and grandchildren Haley, Kirsty, Rochelle and Christopher.

The funeral will take place at 10am Monday, June 28 at Mt. Wellington/ Panmure RSA.
