Panthers claim derby success over Eels

PENRITH registered their biggest ever winning margin against Parramatta at Centrebet Stadium with a 44-12 disposal of a disappointing Eels outfit in front of 14,211 fans tonight.

The win was the Panthers first since a 32-10 success over the Raiders in the opening round. Despite being severely understrength the home side were rarely troubled with halfback Luke Walsh, interchange hooker James Segeyaro and fullback Matt Moylan standouts.

The Panthers started the match in the best possible fashion with Travis Robinson racing 80m to score under the posts in just the 3rd minute. The Eels kicked into the in-goal but Robinson claimed the ball on the full before beating the Parramatta players back out to the 20m line for the restart. With no fullback in position it was a great start for the home side.

The next 10 minutes featured both sides with high completion rates before Eels fullback Jarryd Hayne opened his sides account for the night. Halfback Chris Sandow kicked across field for winger Vai Toutai who picked up the loose ball before being tackled. From the ensuing quick play-the-ball Parramatta spun possession to the left for Hayne to step off his left foot and slice through.

Two tries in four minutes between the 25th and 29th minutes extended the Panthers lead to 16-6 with winger David Simmons and James Segeyaro crossing. Simmons crossed out wide after fullback Matt Moylan linked with centre Dean Whare in the lead up. Segeyaro was the beneficiary of some more creative lead-up work from Walsh and Moylan. The play was reminiscent of one performed by the Melbourne Storm.

The Eels hit back through winger Toutai in the 32nd minute with a barnstorming run where he left several Panthers defenders lying on the ground. In the shadows of halftime Robinson scored his second try in the corner after Walsh was again the architect and the Panthers took a 20-12 lead to the break.

The Panthers extended their lead further in the 52nd minute when Segeyaro crossed for his second try of the night. From a set-start winger David Simmons burst through some feeble Parramatta defence before racing 50-metres downfield. Fullback Matt Moylan was looming up in support and Simmons found the fullback who delivered a perfectly timed ball to Segeyaro who scored under the posts.

Dean Whare put the result beyond doubt in the 62nd minute when he took advantage of a miraculous pass from winger David Simmons. Walsh kicked to his winger and despite Simmons being under the attention of two Eels defenders he managed to release the ball out the back. Whare was on the spot to take advantage of his good luck and secure the Panthers first win in six weeks.

Lewis Brown looked like he wrapped up the scoring in the shadows of full-time after Walsh again weighted a perfect kick into space. The former Warrior gleefully picked up the ball on the bounce after Toutai slipped over.

But the Panthers weren’t finished there with David Simmons adding another try to an already impressive performance as the fulltime siren sounded when he latched onto yet another Walsh cross-field kick.

Next week the eels need to regroup for the visit of the Cowboys while the Panthers travel to Allianz Stadium to tackle the in-form Roosters next Sunday.
