South Sydney has signed Parramatta super-sub Dean Widders to a three-year deal.
Widders had been widely tipped to be part of the Rabbitohs' recruitment drive under new majority owners Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes A Court. The 26-year-old forward told the media last weekend he was being squeezed out of Parramatta because of salary cap constraints.
Widders, who became a member of the National Indigenous Council on Monday, says he is looking forward to working with boxer Anthony Mundine in the club's Aboriginal community programs.
Elsewhere, it has been reported that Canberra fullback Clinton Schifcofske is considering a deal to play for the Queensland Reds Super 14 franchise next year.
Contracted to the Raiders beyond 2006, Schifcofske has a get-out clause in his contract dependent upon Matt Elliott staying as coach. With Elliott off to Penrith next year, Schifcofske is said to be weighing up his options to play the 15-a-side game.
