Prince shines as Titans hold out Bulldogs

Match Summary The Gold Coast Titans have held out the Canterbury Bulldogs in controversial circumstances to claim a 24-20 victory and go to the top of the NRL ladder.

With the Titans clinging to a four point lead, Bulldogs utility Michael Sullivan appeared to have grounded the ball on the goal line with just two minutes remaining. With the video replay pundits still analysing the put down, referee Jason Robinson had already ruled a forward pass and awarded a scrum feed to the Titans, effectively putting the match out of reach of the visitors.

Played in front of a crowd of over 22,000 on the Gold Coast, the match began with the Bulldogs getting repeat sets at the Gold Coast line. The Titans however, recovered from the early onslaught to launch a series of attacking raids on both sides of the ruck.

Overlooked by Queensland for the upcoming State of Origin clash, half back Scott Prince gave selectors plenty to think about with a near perfect passing display and attacking football to put the Titans in the driver's seat.

After 22 minutes of play, the home side raced away to a 16-0 lead, leaving a shell-shocked Bulldogs outfit in their wake.

But the Bulldogs struck back with two tries, the first in the 28th minute and another just before half time, to go into the break trailing 16-10.

Prince stamped his authority on the match again in the 46th minute, crashing over just wide of the uprights. Prince converted his own try and to put the Titans up by 22-10.

A try to hooker Corey Hughes in the 52nd minute got the Bulldogs within six before a penalty goal in the 61st minute to the Titans extended their lead to 24-16.

A sensational break from Bulldogs prop forward Jarrad Hickey late in the match set up a four-pointer for lock Reni Maitua in the corner, setting up nail-biting finish.

The Bulldogs continued to come back in the dying stages before the Sullivan's effort at the goal line was called back by the referee.
