Review

Last year?s Premiers Redcliffe secured second spot with an impressive 42-26 win over Easts in the ABC Television match at Dolphin Oval. Big front rower Adam Starr scored the Dolphins first try off a Shane Perry pass after only three minutes for a 6-0 lead. The Tigers although out of finals contention were enthusiastic and winger Steve Beattie crossed out wide after 20 minutes of the match to level the scores. Redcliffe?s try scoring machine Aaron Barba, moving to Penrith in 2004, then snatched a 90 metre intercept to break the deadlock and take his tally to 28 tries this season. Five eight Perry scored to extend the lead and then was again involved in the lead up for Daniel Green?s try for a 22-6 lead at half-time.

Dolphins second row Ben Jones scored an early try in the second half to take the scores to 26-6 and then tries to front row Troy Lindsay and winger Phil Shilvock extended the margin to 38-6. Scott Alo scored for Easts to reduce this deficit but hooker Matt Anderton crossed for Redcliffe for a 42-12 lead. The Tigers ran in three late tries through Mark Leafa, Justin Loomans and Jason Wrigley for the final scoreline. Shane Tronc was named the QRL?s ABC TV Man of the Match following his barnstorming effort. Redcliffe this week host Ipswich in the qualifying final in a reply of last year?s grand final.

Burleigh Bears clinched the 2003 Minor Premiership title on percentages with a 26-4 disposal of ?neighbours? Tweed Heads at Piggabeen. Burleigh raced in four first half tries to lead 20-0 at the break and secured the win with a solid defensive effort in the second half typical of the competition?s best defensive team. The win sees Burleigh have a week off in the finals with fifth placed Tweed to meet Wynnum in the elimination final.

Ipswich finished in third spot to earn a double chance with a 38-28 win over Toowoomba at Bendigo Bank Oval. The Clydesdales built an impressive 24-6 lead in the first half before being overrun after the half-time break by a resurgent Jets outfit. Shane Williams crossed for two tries for Ipswich and Steven West took his season points tally to 254 (15 tries, 97 goals) with 7 goals. For Toowoomba young halfback Ian Lacey notched a hat-trick to cap a solid match.

Wynnum defeated Wests 44-26 at Purtell Park to finish equal with Ipswich on 31 points but the Jets superior for and against record condemns the Seagulls to this week?s knock-out final. Centre Jimmy Ahmat scored a double for Wynnum.

Souths Logan came up with only the club?s fourth win of the season with a 32-16 result over the Comets at Browne Park. Winger Jason Hynes scored a double for the Magpies with Comets front row Stu Cheffirs matching this feat.

Norths continued their second round of solid form with a 46-24 win over North Queensland. Devils five eight Cooper Cronk scored his second haul of 4 tries in two weeks with winger Derek Fletcher notching a double.
