Wests Panthers displayed a lot of courage but in the end the Burleigh Bears proved too big to contain running out 58-14 winners in the ABC Television clash at Purtell Park. The scores were locked at 4 all following early tries to opposing centres Nick Shaw and Alfred Songoro but the Bears then raced in four further tries to lead 24-4 at half-time. A strong try to young Panthers prop forward Isaac Ah Mau early in the second term and a double to Songoro saw Wests trailing only 36-14 after 60 minutes of the match. Unfortunately fatigue was again a factor for the young Panthers with Burleigh adding four more tries to win comfortably. Big second rower Chris Nahi and Shaw notching doubles for the Bears. Skipper Adam Hayden capped a sparkling display in attack and defence to be named QRL man of the match.
Toowoomba Clydesdales stole a 20-16 win over North Queensland Young Guns with a try in the last 90 seconds of their clash at Dairy Farmers Stadium. The scores were level 10-10 at half-time after a tight first period and the Young Guns looked to have clinched a win when they hit the front 16-14 with only nine minutes remaining. But a bust by winger Craig Frawley in the dying stages saw him race 40 metres down the touch line to cross in the corner and snatch victory. Young centre Wallace Solomona, a Queensland under 19?s hopeful, scored a try and kicked two goals for North Queensland.
Premiers Redcliffe repeated the dose with a 29-16 win over last year?s grand final opponents Ipswich Jets at Dolphin Oval. Redcliffe led 6-4 at half-time but finished too strongly for the Jets scoring five tries to three. The forwards paved the way for Redcliffe with back rowers Brian Jellick and Grant Flugge, and hooker Matt Anderton all scoring tries. Fullback Dustin Cooper was also prominent crossing for a good try and kicking four goals.
