Queensland Cup - Round 8 - Review

Toowoomba proved too good for Wynnum Seagulls running away in the second half to win 48-14 in the ABC Television match at Kougari Oval. Wynnum started strongly scoring two good tries through halfback Denny Lambert and fullback David Seage to lead 8-0. The Clydesdales hit back to trail 8-6 when big South African prop Scott Gray crashed over for a try, but Seagulls centre Jimmy Ahmat extended this margin to 14-6 five minutes before half-time. Setting the trend for the second term Wynnum mistakes allowed Toowoomba to score two late tries and lead 16-14 at the break.

The Clydesdales galloped in six tries after half-time with halfback Scott Prince, in his third match back from injury, having a hand in most aspects of Toowoomba?s turn around. Young winger Grant Booker notched a double with centre Craig Frawley also crossing for two tries after appearing for the Broncos in recent weeks. Prince was named QRL man of the match for his performance which even saw a hint of a smile on the face of Wayne Bennett after the match.

Easts surprised Tweed Heads with a hard fought 36-34 win at Piggabeen Complex to stay in touch with the leaders. The Tigers trailed 34-26 but scored two late tries to snatch a thrilling victory. Lock forward Matt Lockyer, brother of Queensland star Darren, was the stand out for Easts crossing for his third try in the last minute of the match and then kicking the sideline conversion, his sixth goal, after the siren to secure the vital two points. Seagulls centre Tom Pritchard crossed for two tries for the home team.

Burleigh maintained its spot in the top five, on percentages, with a solid 34-14 win over Norths at Bishop Park. Veteran winger Aseri Laing scored a double, taking his season?s tally of tries to 8, with centre Nick Shaw also posting two tries in the Bears? seven tries to 3 romp. The Devils are languishing on 4 points after just two wins this year with a staggering injury toll no doubt having an impact.

Last year?s grand finalists Ipswich Jets find themselves on top of the competition ladder following a comfortable 50-20 win over the Comets in Rockhampton. Ricky Bird notching a hat trick for the Jets.

North Queensland had too much talent for Wests Panthers winning 46-10 at Mareeba. Young centre, Wallace Solomona, named in the Queensland under 19 team last week, scored two tries for the Young Guns.

Redcliffe had to overcome a committed Souths Logan outfit to win 34-18 at Davies Park. Dolphins young centre prospect Charles Vis crossing for a double.
