Raiders collect Canterbury scalp in the cold

In conditions which can only be found in the Nation's Capital for Friday Night Football, the Canberra Raiders have pulled off a shock win over the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs defeating them 20-12 tonight.

The freezing conditions at Canberra Stadium favoured the NRL "Cellar Dwellers" although errors showed early for both sides, but the Raiders after 10 minutes started to fire in the opposing force of Mother nature.

The Raiders took the lead early, on the back of some scrappy defence from the Bulldogs, taking advantage of their first attacking set inside the Bulldogs half. Ben Barba was attempting to cover the holes in the line, however he was unsuccessful as the Raiders, spreading the ball wide, endied with a dummy pass from Joel Thompson to find a massive hole, again beating Barba to crash over the line. Opening the account first the Raiders led 4 points to nil with Jarrod Croker missing the goal attempt.

After scoring the try, the Raiders blew the error count to 5-1 with Dane Tilse one of the serial offenders. However in the 25th minute, after more continued pressure from the Bulldogs, it was all undone with another 4-pointer to the Green Machine's Reece Robinson. He took the intercept pass from Andrew Ryan to streak away down field.

By halftime the Raiders had been stuck in their own half for most of the half, however they led on the score board by 10 points. The Bulldogs hadn't been terrible in all this action, having been piling pressure on the Raiders in their half. Looking at the stats at the break, you wouldn't expect Canberra to be leading with only one tackle in the Bulldogs 20 metre line, compared to the 31 times in which the Bulldogs have been tackled in the Raiders 20 metre zone.

Although from this all, Josh Dugan had been missing with State of Origin duties and his replacement hasn't left a hole. Nathan Massey was living up to the standards set by Dugan and running strong into the Dogs line, handling the pressure well although making a single handling error in the first half.

Canberra started the second half much like they played in the opening minutes. And making his mark with a 40/20 attempt was halfback Sam Williams, going down to the Southern corner of the field, however Ben Barba hit the ball back into the field of play. In tow was Reece Robinson running down to collect it. The Bulldogs defence out of position after the long range kick, but in the next play, Joe Picker capitalised on that lacking defence to collect his 4-pointer. From this, the Raiders extended their lead to 16 points to nil.

Come the 60th minute the Bulldogs were still failing to find the tryline. The Raiders collected two extra points with a penalty coming on the back of Bulldog Frank Pritchard having a second effort on Raider Josh Papalii in the ruck. The referee had every right to give the penalty, and with the goal attempt successful, the Raiders continued to run away 18-0.

Making up for his penalty, Frank Pritchard took on the Raiders line on the back of a changeover on the 30 metre line in the 64th minute. Before he was put to ground, he popped the ball inside to Josh Morris for him to step into a hole to find the whitewash to score. The Bulldogs taking three-quarters of the match to score, trailed the Raiders 18-6.

The Raiders were looking to seal it with a field goal attempt in the 68th minute. Any closer to the try line and he would of scored - however Josh McCrone only 8 metres from the line, attempted the field goal but missed.

In his 10th try of the year, Ben Barba put the foot down to run around 3 Raiders defenders on the back of great led up work from his team mates. Simple work from him saw the 'Dogs starting to fight back 18-12, although at this late stage it seemed too little, too late.

Minutes later the Video Referee was brought in for the Raiders, trying to seal the win, but they were denied the points by an obstruction call. Tempers flared a set later when Bulldogs hooker Josh Reynolds smashed Raiders half Sam Williams from behind. Penalty to the Raiders, and they will collect not only the 2 points from the goal, but the 2 of the win.

A second consecutive win sees the Raiders finding their feet at home, to collect their third win of the 2011 NRL season. The Bulldogs had their chances in the opening minutes with 31 tackles made in the Raiders 20 metres zone. Trent Hodkinson needs to work on the last tackle options, but the struggled tonight with Michael Ennis, even those haters need to realise they miss him in the number 9.

The Bulldogs haven't been terrible in all this action, they have been piling pressure on the Raiders in their half. Looking at the stats at the break and the Raiders you wouldn't expect to be leading with only one tackle in the Bulldogs 20 metre line, that is compared to the 31 times in which the Bulldogs have been tackled in the Raiders 20 metre zone. Continuing the bad news for the Bulldogs, the possession swing is with them 57% of the ball compared to the Raiders 43%. From those stats you wouldn't believe the Raiders lead by 10 points.

If the bulldogs want to take this game from the Green Machine, they need to find another way to attack the Raiders line instead of just going to Trent Hodkinson for a kick on the last tackle. 31 times they have been tackled in the 20 metre zone of the Raiders and no points. The Dogs need to overcome the conditions and come out firing for the second 40 minutes.

Although from this all, Josh Dugan has been missing with State of Origin duties and his replacement hasn't left a hole.
