Redcliffe Dolphins News

A strong crowd enjoyed a good days footy at Dolphin Oval last Sunday when the Dolphins ran out victors in 2 of the 3 games on offer while Southern Conference proved to strong for their Northern counterparts in the QLD U17 trial.

The Colts suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of an undermanned Wests outfit to the tune of 58-20. The Dolphins staged a mini fight back early in the second half however a score line of 30 points to nil at the break told the tale of the game. The 2 week break didn?t do the side any favours and they looked badly under done however this result will need to be scrubbed from the memory banks today when the side meets Easts at Langlands Park. Despite the result Sam Maniat had his best outing for the Club and was well supported by the usual suspects Brad Massey and Mick Pares, Sam receives the Leading Edge Sports Man of the Match for last weeks efforts.

The A Grade side put in a powerful defensive display in their 24-4 win over the Panthers. Although the sides defence was the cornerstone of their win the Dolphins also entertained the large crowd with some great ball movement that resulted in tries. This weekend sees the side come up against an Easts outfit that sits just one point behind them on the competition ladder and this game sets itself up as a real good contest. Last weeks Man of the Match Award went to Dan Jones with an impressive display of line running and strong defence, Dan will be found at Hogs Breath Cafe stuffing his face this week enjoying the spoils of his efforts with a meal voucher for 2, Dan just shaded Matt Anderton and Iremia Filipo for the Award.

A fantastic Dolphin Oval crowd witnessed the home side prevail 35-22 over the Clydesdales in a high quality encounter. The lead swung back and forth in the first half however the Dolphins were never headed after scoring in the dying moments of the opening stanza to go to the break 18-16 in front. A Shane Perry try just after the break gave the Dolphins some breathing space and just when it seemed like the side would run away with the game the Clydesdales came back into the match on the back of some good field position and a high amount of possession however the Dolphins defence was up to the task. The win was all the more meritorious considering the side was without mainstays Troy Lindsay after the fourth minute and Adam Starr who missed the game through suspension. Debutants Damien Jentz and Luke Tonion showed their value in the top grade with solid displays while Shane Perry was the Searles Garden Products Player of the Match with another polished showing and Nick Walker was deservedly voted Keystar Autoworld Players Player. This week the side confronts an Easts outfit that will be hungry for a strong display on their home turf in what shapes as an important game for both Clubs.

This weekend sees the first clash for what is sure to be a highly coveted trophy - the 4BC Cup to be awarded to the winner of each clash between Easts and Redcliffe. These two fierce Wizard Cup rivals have been recognised by Southern Cross Broadcasting who have put up this new trophy.

On Air personalities, Peter Psaltis and Rupert McCall are keen supporters of Easts and Redcliffe respectively. While Rupert is noted for his skills as a wordsmith, Peter is confident his colleague will be eating his words by Saturday evening. A huge promotion is planned for the day with the local Quest newspapers joining in the festivities. Make sure you are there on Saturday with the 4BC gang and catch Peter Psaltis on the Greg Cary show weekdays from 6:00 till 7:00 p.m.

On the Representative front congratulations must go to Quin Smith who was selected in the Australian Universities side to take part in the World Cup later this year and also Liam Georgetown, Chris Fox and Iremia Filipo for their selections in the South East Division A Grade side. These guys all deserve a wrap for their approach this year and have been rewarded for hard work.

In the U17 Qld trial held last Sunday at Dolphin Oval the Southern boys proved to strong for their Northern counterparts. Some good ability was on display here and the Qld stocks appear to be in pretty good shape. Good luck in the selection room to all the boys with Qld jumpers up for grabs.

News from the judiciary Duane O'Grady received a one week ban for a dangerous tackle but with an early guilty plea he will be able to take his place in the side this weekend while Troy Lindsay gets a one week ban for a late tackle on Clydesdale Captain Anthony Seibold.
