News

It was 3 wins from 3 games for the Dolphins last weekend at Brandon Park against Souths Logan however it was by no means an easy day. The Magpies have improved substantially on recent years and it was only for the determined efforts of the Dolphins we were able to come away victorious.

The Colts found themselves in a dog fight to the very end when a Souths/Logan conversion after the siren that would have tied the game up was unsuccessful. The Dolphins performance was down a little from the week before with a number of players on rep duty although it must be said the Magpies were also heavily depleted due to rep commitments. The 28 points to 26 scoreline was a fair indication of the game and it was good to see the Dolphins found a way to win despite being off the boil. Once again the sides back row of Logan Sullivan, Matt Handcock and Foisa Peni were instrumental in securing the win and they can count themselves unlucky not to have featured in rep duties this year. Matt received the LEADING EDGE SPORTS Man of the Match with an inspired performance.

The A Grade outfit put in the Clubs most polished display of the day in what was a high quality match. Neither side was giving much away until around the 50th minute when the Dolphins gained the ascendancy with some enterprising play eventually running out 30 points to 16 winners. Second rower Richie Russell is finding form and had a strong game receiving the HOGS BREATH CAFE Man of the Match award and was well supported by Dominic Fallini who has handled the transition into the senior grades very well. Chris Giumelli and Scott Gillis also deserve a mention for strong showings.

After 20 minutes of the Wizard Cup match it looked as though the Magpies were going to assign the Dolphins to their second consecutive loss getting out to a 14 points to nil lead. The remaining hour of the match saw the Dolphins grind themselves back into the game drawing equal at 14 all with 12 minutes remaining. Then with 8 minutes left on the clock debutant winger Kaine Manihera crashed over for his second try that was duly converted for a 20 points to 14 victory. Although the Dolphins execution wasn?t quite where it could be their effort was outstanding and in the end it was this that won them the match. SEARLES GARDEN PRODUCTS Player of the Match went to Pat Gardner with a strong showing while Grant Flugge was voted by his peers as the KEYSTAR AUTOWORLD Players Player. Congratulations to Kaine Manihera who had a solid debut after some early jitters.

On the representative scene the Dolphins have some congratulations to hand out with David Hala being selected in the U17 QLD Schoolboys side and Richie Russell, Scott Gillis, Pat McGill and Dominic Fallini gaining selection in the South East A Grade side. Well done guys, these selections are good reward for hard work. Kaine Manihera was also selected in the A Grade side however his elevation to the Wizard Cup side makes him ineligible.

This weekend sees Adam Starr play his 100th First Grade match for the Dolphins almost 15 years after his first. With stints at the Roosters, Tigers, Eels and in France it has taken Starry a little longer to rack up his century. Adam has been a great asset to the Dolphins with his wholehearted approach to training and his game, it would be difficult to find a big man who moves as well as Starry and there has been many a ?wippett? who?s been left in the big guys wake on the training paddock. Well done Starry, the Dolphins thank you for your contribution and wish you all the best for your 100th hit out.

This weekend at Dolphin Oval should be a blockbuster when the Dolphins take on the Young Guns. Both sides will be keen to gain the early ascendancy in a game that will see one side move to the outright competition lead. In the lower grades the Dolphins tackle newcomers the Sunshine Coast who have performed above expectations and are sure to test the Dolphins mettle.
