Round 1 Team
of the Week

Fullback - Billy Slater (Storm) Bagged a hat trick of tries and led the way for the Storm as they trounced the hapless Knights. Boy he's got some pace about him!

Wing - Dustin Cooper (Knights) Played hard in a badly beaten team and went over the line for the Knights' only two tries. A big guy with plenty of power and pace.

Centre - Terry Hill (Sea Eagles) Stitched up the Warriors with some good old-fashioned, hard-nosed rugby league, and managed to escape the claws of the judiciary.

Centre - Paul Bowman (Cowboys) Displayed touches of class in the centres for the Cowboys and held them in there well. They'll need him fit all year to repeat last season's heroics.

Wing - Willie Tonga (Bulldogs) Gun on the wing here and created plenty of problems for the Dragons. Awesome step and created trouble every time he had the ball.

Five-eighth - Darren Lockyer (Broncos) Once again displayed why he's the world's best. Will take some real stopping this season in a revamped Bronco's side who look very good.

Halfback - Matt Orford (Storm) One of the form half-back's of the comp and looks in fine touch early in the season. Last year's League Unlimited Player of the Year, and is set to feature in 2005.

Lock - Tony Grimaldi (Bulldogs) Tradesman-like performance and capped it off with a smart try on the stroke of halftime. No nonsense type of guy who gets the job done.

Second row - Andrew Ryan (Bulldogs) Two-try hero and was one of the Bulldogs main strike weapons. This guy is one of the best back-rowers running around right now.

Second row - Glenn Morrison (Eels) Starred for his new club and looks to have found a new level of aggression in his play. Set for a big year.

Prop - Hutch Maiava (Sharks) Big effort from Hutch. Scored a try after bombing a good chance earlier in the game. Stuart Raper would have been looking on loving what he saw on Saturday night. Not so for Johnny Lang.

Hooker - Nathan Fien (Warriors) Clever play from the hooker but got caught up in some controversy when his head wouldn't stop bleeding and he stayed on the field. Shades of Benny Elias.

Prop - Jason Cayless (Roosters) Punched out a strong effort first up against an enthusiastic Rabbitohs outfit. The Roosters will need this sort of thing every week from him.

Interchange - Anthony Laffranchi (Tigers), Craig Wing (Roosters), Michael Witt (Sea Eagles), Michael Sullivan (Sharks).

These guys did enough to earn a bench spot and would be pretty handy throughout the course of the game.
