Sattler - Dream Team Captain

John Sattler was last night named captain of South Sydney's 'dream team' at a ceremony in Sydney.

Sattler led the Rabbitohs to four premiership wins in his nine years at the rugby league club, including the famous 1970 victory over Manly in which he played almost the entire match with a broken jaw.

The inspirational forward played 197 games for Souths between 1963-72 as well as four games for NSW, three matches for Queensland and four Tests for Australia.

Sattler edged the likes of Clive Churchill, Jack Rayner, Jim Lisle and George Piggins to captain the Rabbitohs all-time best line-up.

Churchill - who appeared in 164 games for Souths between 1947-58 along with 27 games for NSW and 34 Tests for Australia - was named at fullback, Lisle at five-eighth and Rayner as coach.

Piggins couldn't even force his way into the line-up, losing the hooking battle to Elwyn Walters.

Rayner coached Souths to five premierships in the 1950s, blooding the likes of Churchill, Les 'Chic' Cowie, Johnny Graves and Ian Moir.

The most contentious positions in the Souths squad were wing and back row.

The likes of Benny Wearing - the Rabbitohs all-time leading try-scorer - Cec Blinkhorn and Michael Cleary missed out on the wings where Horder and Ian Moir reigned supreme.

The back row positions were filled by three of the legends of the game - Ron Coote, Bob McCarthy and George Treweeke.
