Sea Eagles out-grit Raiders

The Manly Sea Eagles have come away with a hard earned 16-10 victory over the Canberra Raiders in front of 10,871 fans at Brookvale.

The home side have had a tough run over the past month- coming up against all three of their fellow top four sides during the period.

Despite being outside the top eight, the Raiders proved to be more than a handful, dominating possession for the first 60 minutes of the match and throwing everything at the Manly Sea Eagles before burning out in the final 15 minutes.

It was the Raiders who opened up the scoring after four back-to-back sets. Edrick Lee scored in the corner in the 11th minute. Jarrod Croker failed to convert.

The Sea Eagles hit back through Jamie Lyon minutes later who. Lyon also missed the shot at goal, leaving scores level.

The Raiders were over again when Lee plucked a Josh McCrone cross-field bomb out of the air to score his second in the 21st minute; Croker added the extras. They took control of the match from there, dominating possession and field position but failing to get over the try line.

A penalty a few minutes out from half-time saw Manly on the attack and they did not waste the opportunity, with Williams scoring in the corner. Lyon failed to add the extras.

After the break, the Raiders threw everything at the Sea Eagles again with series of back-to-back sets at the Sea Eagles' line, but the homeside's defence proved too good. The Sea Eagles were rewarded for their hard work with back-to-back sets in the 67th minute. They took advantage of the opportunity through Williams who scored his second try to give his side the lead for the first time in the match. Lyon failed to convert again.

Justin Horo looked to have sealed the win in 75th minute with his try, but when Lyon failed to convert the game remained up for the taking.

Jack Wighton looked to have scored in the 79th minute to give his side one last chance, however, video referee Matt Rodwell denied Wigton after replays showed he knocked the ball on.

Both sides will enjoy a bye next week before their round 13 clashes. A fortnight away the Sea Eagles take on the Warriors in Auckland, and the Raiders host the Broncos in Canberra.
