Sharks edge out Knights in Golden Point
The Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks have run out winners against the Newcastle Knights today, triumphing 21-20 in extra time at Hunter Stadium in front of 16,983 fans.
In the first game to go to golden point this season, the Sharks managed to kick the winner through Jeff Robson in the 84th minute. Both sides took multiple attempts at field goals through numerous players in what turned out to be a back and forth thriller of a game.
The games first points came early in the 3rd minute when Dane Gagai crashed through defenders and stretched his arm out to put the goal down in the in goal area. Gidley converted to give the Knights the early lead. Gidley was able to take the lead to 8 after receiving a penalty right in front of the posts and opting to take the two points on offer.
The Sharks were next to score, hitting back with back to back tries only 5 minutes apart. The first came off a Todd Carney pass to an inside running Jonathan Wright. He ran through the defensive line almost untouched to get the Sharks onto the scoreboard. Michael Gordon missed the conversion.
Jonathan Wright was in for his second of the day after only 27 minutes of the game after Robson put a short kick into the goal area for Wright to jump on it and ground the ball. Video replays showed a possible finger by Wade Graham touching the ball however the video referees saw otherwise. Gordon missed the second conversion of the afternoon.
The next try came off a great run by James McManus, and just before half time. McManus ran for the corner but was taken down by several defenders. This left the Sharks short for defense on the right hand side of the field and David Fa'alogo steamed onto a short ball to score for Newcastle. Gidley kicked the goal and the Knights had retaken the lead.
Beau Ryan was next to score in the 45h minute of the game. Fifita ran across field and found Gordon who took a few steps before throwing a cut out pass to Beau Ryan who had no one in front of him. Gordon kicked the conversion levelling the scores.
In the 61st minute a great run by Gordon set up Carney to be able to throw a dummy close to the line and crash over to give the Sharks the lead. Gordon kicked the goal to move a converted try in front.
The last try of the game came in the 70th minute after Tahu made a break down the left hand side of the field. He offloaded to McKinnon who was able to get the ball back on the inside to Roberts who scored the try. Gidley converted and the scores were again level, at 20 – 20.
Both teams traded several field goal attempts, with Gidley and Carney taking all of them until the full time siren was sounded. Once extra time was under way, Tyrone Roberts and Wade Graham also had attempts. The winning kick came from Jeff Robson, and the Sharks can now claim the first golden point victory for the 2013 season.
The Sharks will play the Tigers next week in Friday Night Football while the Knights will travel to Canberra to take on the Raiders on Sunday.
