Slater sails back to number one

The Melbourne Storm have rewarded head coach Craig Bellamy with back-to-back wins as he celebrated his 300th match. The Rabbitohs went down at ANZ Stadium, 27-14, as it was a horror game for the Cardinal and Myrtle.

The Storm rolled through early as the Rabbitohs were error riddled from kick off. First points came just 3 minutes into the contest as Man of the Match, Billy Slater split defence via a Cooper Cronk grubber.

Cameron Smith shifted to the halves and the history was in his favour taking 6 wins from 8 starts when he has filled in at five-eighth.

Mid-way through the first half, the Storm jumped to a 14-0 lead through a penalty goal from Cameron Smith and four-pointer to Cooper Cronk (24th minute).

The Rabbitohs gifted a brief period of possession and they capitalised as young gun, Alex Johnston posted the first of two tries in the 31st minute.

In the shadows of half time, Sisa Waqa was awarded the Storm's third try as he took an offload from Will Chambers to darted under the Rabbitohs defence. After a flurry of possession, the visitors led 20-4 after 40 minutes.

Adam Reynolds and John Sutton were out to impress NSW Blues coach, Laurie Daley as they put their claims for State of Origin. A brilliant Sutton left foot step through the Melbourne defence saw Adam Reynolds taken an inside pass to bolt away for the Rabbitohs second four-pointer. Minutes into the second half, South Sydney trailed 20-10.

The Rabbitohs faithful were hopeful as Alex Johnston charged over for his second try (51st minute), however it wasn't to be as the Billy Slater claims his double minutes later.

Cooper Cronk secured victory for Melbourne with a 75th minute field goal. The Storm too strong for South Sydney, 27-14 in front of 18,508 in Sydney Olympic Park.

Next week the Rabbitohs head south to The Shire as they battle the Sharks at Remondis Stadium, while the Storm take a week off with a bye.
