The Bulldogs rugby league club has confirmed that injured star Sonny Bill Williams has been charged with what it described as a low level drink driving in Sydney's east early this morning. He has been given police bail and is expected to face Waverley Local Court next month.
The club says it is investigating the matter. It is another blow for Williams during a disappointing season. The 20-year-old has hardly played this season after suffering a series of leg injuries and is unlikely to take the field again for the Bulldogs this year unless they can scrape into the finals.
It has also emerged that he is an unlikely starter for New Zealand in the end-of-season Tri-Nations tournament.
